The maximum number of active players on the El Paso roster is 28.  I can see them keeping from 13 to 15 active pitchers.  Currently, there are 24 pitchers listed on the El Paso roster and you can probably expect the Padres to send down 10-11 pitchers on their 40 man with options remaining.  Got a couple more weeks left before the rosters pare down but it will be interesting to guess which pitchers make the Chihuahua staff.  I'll give it a shot before the end of next week but whoever is on that staff, it is going to be a very good one!

Good luck!

Since all the affiliate rosters are “overstocked” with pitchers and some of those arms are vying to move up a level with ST performances going to be a challenge not only determine who the Padres retain but where they get placed. Could see some of the EP arms in SA (maybe even an optioned 40 man roster guy).

As we speak of an oversupply of minor league pitchers ... the Padres just added LHRP CD Pelham to the El Paso roster. He was a minor league FA ... not really a good one.

CD one of them nasty gas throwing lefty with solid 10 5 /9IP SO.. but horrific BB/9 rate well north of 6... Closing experience a +.. interesting signing with all the surplus P we got..

Not that nasty.

4 RP with options sent down today - Avila, Baez, Cosgrove and Felipe.  No surprises.  Stammen's injury is an interesting development.  Could end up on El Paso's 60 day IL which would make him available to San Diego a couple of months into the season if they need him.  Kind of like what is likely going to happen to Hamels.  Otherwise, when healthy enough will be released in favor of a younger arm with some projection.

Should be an exciting year in the Padres' minor league system as they showcase a baker's dozen of young starting pitchers.  Debuting this year are the following 6:  Lesko, Snelling, Mazur, Henry Williams, Lowe and Haynes.  Continuing to develop are the following 7:  Lizarraga, Hawkins, Iriarte, Vela, Wolf, Henry Baez and Leija.

Some will show dominance, some will improve their previous shortcomings, while others will go from prospect to suspect.  No matter what happens, it will be interesting to watch these core 13 pitchers throughout the season and see if any is on his way to become a key part of the Padres major league rotation in the mid-2020's.  Hope to see a lot of them on MiLB.com.

By the way, there are always some pitchers that come out of the blue and become dominant.  Let's hope several of those types show up this year also.  Any pitcher you think might fit that category?

Javier Chacon seems like one to watch based on his complex league performance last year.

Two international SPs who received relatively large bonuses but were injured all or part of last year are:  Bradgley Rodriguez ($350,000 in 2021) and Braian Salazar ($500,000 in 2022).  Not Jarlin Susana money but Padres don't usually give this kind of money to young international pitchers so might expect some improvement from either of them.

AAA 2023 Padres roster looking to be very very good

AAA 2023 Padres roster looking to be very very good

Should be … at least based on ST views. With the WBC players returning and only 2 weeks until the start of the ML/AAA seasons … ML players are going to start getting optioned and AAA players will start getting weeded out … too many in camp to fit the ML/AAA roster.

This is always an interesting debate as to when the releases occur … one point of view is make no move until the last moment (to protect vs injuries) but the more “human” view is that if you “know” a player is not making the roster, should you release them early to give them (their agent) time to try to hook up with another organization.

1B Ruvelo/Rivas

2B Odor/Howell

3B Dixon

SS Lopes/Howell

RF Tucker

CF Azocar/Howell

LF Kohlwey/Liberato

C Severino/Fernadez/Sullivan

Utility Batten

DH rotated

Pretty solid lineup..

Wide open on choices but as an alternative:

C: Severino; Sullivan

1B/DH: Ruvelo; Rivas

2B: Schrock

SS: Lopes

3B: Dixon

LF: Kohlway

CF: Dahl (after Tatis returns) ... Tucker (to AA or released when Dahl sent to AAA)

RF: Ornelas

Utility: Batten; Mendosa; Liberato

I know the roster is 28 but guessing the go 13 position and 15 pitchers.

To AA: Fernandez; Howell; Tucker ... AA needs some bats

Released: Odor
