Jazz Chisholm 2.0....but with a better arm....and a Switch hitter.

Merrill #10

Zavala #84

Lesko #103

With some guys in front of them playing in the MLB and graduating soon.. Woods could be #1 and Merrill top 5... as soon as May

Keith Law said today he wouldn't be shocked if Merrill made the Padres roster late this year.. thats wild man!

With all the INF that will be at the WBC this spring, he should be front and center for a few games, and have the eyes of the coaches. It will be fun to see how he performs.

Minor league season start about a week after the majors; does anyone know when the rest of the minor leaguers arrive in Peoria?  Padres have a ton of players and have to get down to 180 for their 5 stateside minor league teams.  Not sure if extended ST or 60 day IL placement counts but some of those players may be excluded for those reasons.  Typically, a team releases 30 or so players before the MLB/minor league season starts.  Should not be difficult for Padres to shed some of their players who are just hanging on but the dream does end for many more than it is fulfilled.

I have a feeling Doersching is going to end up in AA in 2023

You do realize that Doersching only hit .227 last year in Low A and struck out 35% of the time.  Thinking more Ft. Wayne and only because of his age.  If, in fact, Doersching ends up in AA with Mears, going to see a lot of swing and miss but also some bombs flying out of that stadium.  I'll be there during the last week of April to see the Missions for a couple of games.  Should be a fun trip at both SA and El Paso before heading back to San Diego.

Should be an interesting battle between  Doersching (23 RHH) and and Martorella (21 LHH) for placement between A, A+ and AA. Both a  1B/DH with the DH being more aligned with their defense skill set … although in the minors both will be in the field to work on improving defensive skills. Both are LHH, with Doersching (8th round) the bigger body and power profile and Martorella (5th round) the better hitter. At LE last season,

Doersching in 106 PA hit .227 (.861 OPS)

Martorella in 72 PA .288 (.860 OPS)

ST for them and other competition in SA/FW might start them both at any level and have the better performer move up during the season.

Carlos Luis and Yorman Rodriguez did okay last year so they might still be in the picture as 1b men.  You also have guys that will be pushed down from the 40 man (like Dixon) and several FA signees who were invited to ST.  From the bottom up, you got guys like Montesino and Fabian who both could be put at 1b rather than in the corner OF.  With the DH, more of these guys will get opportunities so it will be interesting to see how the 1st base position will be staffed in the minor leagues.
