Minor League Discussion

I just read something in the UT that said they are still deciding whether he will start out in Arizona or the Dominican. Most of those guys start in the Dominican, but a few like Susana and Lizarraga were mentioned as guys who have started out in Arizona.

Guessing they bring him to ST in AZ then make the call when ACL/DSM seasons start ... part based on his performance and part based on the performance of the very long list of catching candidates queued up for the ACL in ST. If there are other catching candidates who are deemed legit prospects (other than King) ... may want to ensure they get sufficient playing time somewhere to make a final sort before releasing some.

Even if Salas begins in the DSL ... would not be surprised if he is moved to the ACL mid-season.

Baseball America is reporting an 18th signing, Ismel Diaz, another catcher signed on 15 Jan.

I would be very surprised if Salas doesn't start his career in the ACL despite the fact that there are a total of 16 catchers that will be listed at either the ACL or Dominican roster as spring training starts.  If you subtract out Homza, Kerner, Duarte and Quintero as competing for a spot in Low A or above because of their prior experience still have 12 for the two rookie leagues.  King and Linares seem to have the most potential but neither is at the Salas level.  I expect Salas to show almost immediately why he was the top international prospect this year and I would not be surprised if he finished the 2023 season at Lake Elsinore at the ripe old age of 17.

It is likely all the pitchers the Padres signed yesterday got the 10K maximum since they already had 21 pitchers on the current DSL roster.

Jesus.. this kid is ready man.. what an interview in Hot Stove...

Youngest player ever in Venezuela Winter League facing and catching MLB dudes..avg age was +12+ years older.. amazing!

For some reason when I look at him I see Javy Lopez.

Lopez obviously wasn't a switch hitter but he did play for 15 years hit 260 ML HR's and ended with a career .828 OPS as a Catcher.

This kid may be even better but that's a hell of a career to strive for.

Not sure on this but think he only played in one game … 4 PA / 0 hits / 2 BB.

The fact he was on the roster and working out with the older guys is in itself a major achievement … youngest ever.

=======

Saw the Hot Stove interview … very impressive. Will be in SD in a couple of weeks to discuss his role in 2023.
