Minor League Discussion

Groome has been terrific in El Paso so far... very good news for 23 and beyond

RP come for everywhere ... Padres always have a position player or two they try to covert the RP.

This year it is long standing SS prospect Justin Lopez (still only 22) who is being converted in the ACL. Early returns are positive ... 7 innings / 7 hits / 3 BB / 9 K ... a 1.29 ERA / 1.43 WHIP.

Long way to go ... but for a RP with stuff ... always hope.

Looks as though our man Doersching is enjoying LE.

Yesterday 3 for 5 with two HR. In his stay he is up to .318 BA / 1.364 OPS.

So far in 30 PA for LE … 8 BB … 7 for 22 with 4 HR … .500 OBP. If the seasons were not quickly winding down … would be tempted to move him to a more challenging FW.

Likely he starts 2023 in FW (Luis may be in SA to start the season in SA at 1B) but if he starts off hot … could be an early promotion for him.

At 24 he has a lot of playing under his belt … so we need to see him up against some more comparable prospects in 2023.

Doersching with 5 HR in 12 games.

Our 1B/DH in 2024

For some perspective Doersching is a month and a half older than Soto.

Not his fault covid happened and he decided to play 5yrs of College..he still a 1st yr Pro ball player.. With that said Pads need to push him up with a goal of MLB by his 25 yr season 2024..

Not put off by his age given all the circumstances. I would let him develop at his pace to get the max ML product when he arrives ... even if that is 2025. Basically put him in situations that challenge him but he should be able to handle. Just don't mess him up by pushing him because of his age and ML need. IF he is a legit prospect ... want him at this best for the 6 control years ... and a year later start is fine.

Just too early to make a call. Need to see him up against some more experienced pitching to really tell his potential. Should get a bit in high A in 2023 but the real test will be AA also maybe in 2023.

Side: would love if they have found the next Goldschmidt but fine if Doersching just develops into a normal productive ML player like Pujols 🙂

I'd take someone a bit more realistic like Frank Thomas.. Griffin "The Big Cowboy" Doersching... walk up music ..Garth Brooks "I got Friends in lone places"

Doersching with another 2 HRs but don't overlook what just turned 18 year old Samuel Zavala is doing after only playing 10 games in the ACL because of injury.  Zavala had two doubles and another HR today with a 905 OPs after 17 games with Lake Elsinore.

With so many players traded and upcoming free agents and rule 5 eligible players in the Padres' minor league system, there is going to be a lot of upward mobility.  Doersching and Zavala are certainly two to watch.
