Minor League Discussion

PreviousPage 205 of 355Next

Groome is heading to El Paso.

Going to be interesting how the Padres shuffle minor league players to cover all the prospects that have been traded. Expect some "out of position" moves just to get bodies on the field.

I am interested in seeing where Griffin Doersching starts A/A+ or even AA... he is a 23 yr old draftee..  with 80 grade power #1 in that tool in our system ... if he shows well could push his way up the ladder fast..could bode well for DH/1B options in 24/25 if not sooner

I think the usual suspects will be moved to fill the minor league position player gaps, older players who were placed on the ACL roster, i.e., Alarcon, Ilarraza and possibly Vizcarra and Bender (the latter didn't make an A team out of spring training).  As far as actual promotions, several deserving candidates in LE who are having break-out seasons.  Among them Luis, Fabian, Castanon and Zabala; also, because of his age, Farmer.   Since the Padres have literally tons of catchers (31 by my last count), several of the old names - like Quintero and Cantu are likely to be released.

Not sure many minor league pitchers will move anywhere, since only Susana and Gasser were traded and most rosters have lots of pitchers on them with several on rehab assignments.  Denz could return to Ft. Wayne and Leija could be moved from the DSL to the ACL but there are a lot of 2022 draftees and free agent pitchers to accommodate.  The thing about pitchers is that they are so much more volatile than hitters.  One could easily emerge as a lights-out guy as well as one could fall because of injury or lack of mental toughness.  We did give up two very good pitchers, but the cupboard is far from bare.

Doersching could start at LE if Luis is moved to Ft. Wayne.  I'm expecting more of a Joey Gallo than a James Wood contribution out of Doersching, but we shall see.

Would love to see our top 20 list after the big trade

While the trade certainly depleted our system...we did get Groome # 11 in the deal from Sox..at one point he was their Gore..and he got out of shape and lost some stamina.. (remember Naylor) things that can be fixed especially with SD vs Sox and a clear path to contribute as soon as now..but definetely in 23

While at it..guys like Zavala ..Snelling ...Lesko just added (same experts ranked our draft top 5)..will be sprinkled all over our top 30.. Also remember we are signing international ranked # 1 Catcher Ethan Salas (yes yes i know 4 or 5 yrs away) BUT he is been compared tona young Molina...

If I know one thing 💯 is AJP can go from bottom 2/3 system to top 10 with + 1 draft and 1 Intl signing cycle + added development...

I see Doersching "quiet" bat and swing and I see a lot more Paul G.. than I do Gallo (Mears)... His stroke is so compact and the ball just jumps out of his bat.. is hard for me to see anything above a 25% SO rate if he has good plate discipline..

Love your enthusiasm but if Doersching really has a "Paul G" stroke, he would have been drafted a lot higher than #8, especially as a 4th year senior.  But let's enjoy him while we can and if he is at LE, I'll be driving up there soon to see a great team and especially Jackson Merrill.

Zavala, Salinas and Alarcon just listed on LE roster.  Guessing some current LE players are on the move to FtW.  Bender also off the ACL roster.

At least based on stats … looking like a breakout season for some under the radar prospects like Carlos Luis (23, LHH 1B, LE) … been around a long time and only in A ball but maybe something?

Also, Alan Mundo (20, P, LE) … also been around a long time but he is still young and a pitcher …

At the end of the season with the FA … will be a ton of open 40 man roster slots for the Rule 5 eligible prospects … should be interesting to see if they protect any far away prospect (eg Luis, Mundo) with low probability  of being selected vs maybe lesser projection prospects but closer to helping in 2023-4.

Any insight on what the Padres are doing with Campusano now?

Saw in the transactions that he has just been “reassigned to the minor leagues” … he was on the EP roster and that description usually suggests a player going to AZ to work on “something”. Not an IL call.

Making links … could this be connected to the trade for another catcher yesterday … Gallagher.

Conversion to (or develop versatility for) 1B / OF to increase his value to the 2023 Padres given the FA to be.
