There's a pretty wide chasm between Reed, who is 23 and entered this year with a five year track record of scouts and baseball people saying 'man, I sure hope he figures it out someday,' and Tatis.

That said, he's made  mechanical changes that have led to significant changes in both performance and production. And while the underlying numbers look pretty similar to the "breakout" Gettys had in his first stint with Elsinore, I think there's a bit more underlying baseball ability and hand-eye coordination there for Reed (who, it should be noted, is the older of the two).

I think the results so far are promising, but think it will be wise to keep moving him slowly.

I understand the age difference in regards to their prospect status......I was more referring into the "jump" in the Padre system Reed may take.

After trading for Tatis he was regarded highly......but only around 15th or so in our system. But after last seasons breakout he obviously jumped to #1.Of course his age has alot to do with that.

But my point was more in regards to the possible jump that Reed may make.

He was also highly regarded(as he was drafted high) but considered high teens or even lower in some cases in our system.

This was obviously because of the doubts about his hitting ability.

"IF" this seasons plays out as it has started how high do you think he can move?

How much will his age limit this movement in your opinion?

I realize he's not young.....but if he puts up a .320-.360-550 season with  20+ HR and 40+ SB's wouldn't he jump into the top 5?

I think a combination of his age, a healthy dose of skepticism given his track record, and an eye towards potentially unsustainable peripherals like his BABIP would keep him from bouncing too far up the rankings. I'd think Top 10 would be much more realistic than Top 5, but who knows? If he is able to keep this up all season the results could be hard for even the biggest skeptics to ignore.

Top 10 for Reed would be a bit much. He would have to move up to SA pretty soon and get a good 300AB there with only a slightest of deviations to even crack the top 15 for me.

but who knows? If he is able to keep this up all season the results could be hard for even the biggest skeptics to ignore.”

Thats what I was getting at.

Hard to think he will but if he has a monster year.....even better that the one Tatis had last year,it wouldn’t just be hard to ignore...it would be impossible.

But I agree that I’d like to see him in AA sooner rather than later.

If nothing else the last 2 months have shown he needs to be there pronto.

Actually,it’s pretty perplexing that he isn’t in SA already?

Allday,Kohlway and Boykin certainly aren’t holding him back.

Id love to see an OF with Getty’s and Reed in it.

Plus Podorsky should be in LE anyway.

Looks like Walker Lockett is getting the call tomorrow night. Here's to hoping the kid has better results in the bigs than he did in El Paso.

Just thinking, with Villanueva's power surge and defensive play, it seems like he is the third baseman for the foreseeable future. With that being said, Tatis seems to improving offensively as well, but how is his defense doing. No drop off? Do you think he will get a call up in September? If Tatis isn't going to move third, the Padres are going to have to make a decsion on Galvis sooner or later. I can't imagine the Padres are going to sign Galvis to a three year deal and I can't imagine his agent allowing him to sign a one year deal. So it seem like Tatis will be the shortstop next season for the Padres and let him grow into the position, or sign a journeyman for one year which I don't they they want to do. Any thoughts?

If they are aggressive with Tatis, and he gets a call up to EP in July and then spends July in August in AAA with a call up in Sept to SD, I still find it difficult to believe that they are going to rest their middle INF on a 20 year old and a 21 year old. And with the strength and the depth of the 2018 FA class, I think Galvis is going to find it difficult to find a great contract for himself. I think it works out well for both sides; SD and Galvis, if they do a 3 year contract. In a perfect world, Galvis provides switch hitting back up for 3B, SS, and 2B; then, should either Tatis, CV, or Urias falter he is able to step back in to a starting role around whichever player is stumbling a bit. In this situation, I can still see Galvis getting 350-450 ABs a year. And that would also bring an end to the need/spot for Asuaje and Spangy, which is a good thing as well.

Does Galvis have any experience at 3b and 2b?

Despite a flukish hot streak for a few weeks early in the year, Galvis has already settled in just above the bottom decile of qualified hitters. If he makes it to the end of the year, he'll be among the five to seven worst offensive players producers for the season. He is inferior in every way (except as a back-up shortstop) to Cory Spangenberg already.

He is, for all intents and purposes, Alcides Escobar. The Royals were (appropriately) roundly ridiculed for signing Escobar to a one-year, $2.5M deal four months ago.

In terms of Tatis, he Is. Not. Moving. To. Third. Base. to reach the majors. I'm not sure why that persists. Nobody has ever thought he'd need to move over to reach the majors. The only question is whether he'll eventually fill out enough that he has to move.  Corey Seager is bigger than Tatis with less arm, and he's 350 games into his stint at shortstop in the big leagues with no sign that he'll need to move for another few years. That's the potentiality for Tatis.

Galvis is a defensive replacement SS on a contending team.

Which obviously we aren't.....plus he's playing every day.

I am curious if he could play the role of super utility but then again he doesn't hit enough to warrant the roster spot really.

That trade will end up looking even worse than it already does once De Los Santos makes it to MLB.
