Good year to find out.
No, it's a bad year to find out. Soto gets the call because the Nationals are competing. He's struggling, that's justification for leaving him in AAA for the whole year.

Quote from fenn68 on May 22, 2018, 8:39 amAs one would expect, the add of Hosmer is impacting Naylor's future. Most have heard that he is being experimented in LF but considering his 38 games this year are 19 1B / 19 LF they may just up taking that experiment deep no matter how he shows. Maybe helps the Padres down the road in LF but also may add to his trade value in a couple of years.
1B has been covered by Overstreet (15 games) ... more of a long shot utility type (also caught 5 games) but note that A.Allen has move to 1B for 9 games. Again some versatility may add to has longer term value regardless if his defense behind the plate improves to ML quality or not ... as with Naylor his bat may be his prime calling card.
Both are probably in growing pains experimenting with new positions but the Padres will have to work through that maximize the value of their bats.

Quote from David Jay on May 22, 2018, 8:40 amQuote from Ryan Payne on May 21, 2018, 11:02 amI can't imagine this is something the Padres would overlook in the medicals for that much money, seems a little too problematic and I never read any report that said this was a problem in high school. So why the change now? Weather changes between Arizona/Fort Wayne? Grip? Whatever the reason, it needs to be figured out.
A) Blisters aren't a medical condition.
B) The ball in pro baseball starts out significantly different and a "beat up" "old" ball used in BP is nicer than most high school game balls by about the third inning of a game.
C) The throwing program in an average week at spring training is probably about 4X as many throws as he likely had in an average week during high school. During a week of the regular season, it's probably 2-3 times. (That's one reason you see some high school pitchers flatline or even regress with velocity even as they add strength in the pro game.)

Surely Naylor’s best value to the Padres is as a trade chip to an A.L. Team?
I like Allen as backup C/1B and I “don’t” like Naylor in LF.
Either way I hope they both keep hitting!

Quote from Ryan Payne on May 23, 2018, 6:32 pmCal Quantrill with a solid start tonight despite shaky defense behind him that inflated his pitch count - He had to throw 18 extra pitches by my count because of errors that would have ended the inning.
Edit : I assumed he was done after 5 and 90+ pitches - Guess not. Over 100 and gave up a tying home run after a double play. Leaves after 5 2/3. Surprised they sent him out there.
