Good question. Has not been put on the IL (although that may not be all that conclusive).

His last outing was not good but he did finish the inning striking out three although gave up a couple of hits, a walk and a HBP. So could have been a pitch count issue since he when 39 in that inning. He had been going 3 innings in his previous starts but control has been an issue (as it often is coming off TJ).

Maybe they are just doing sideline work on his throwing to improve the control issue?

Along the same lines ... Lawson has been put in the IL in San Antonio.

One reason I ask is Espinoza's rookie cards are super cheap and being a once top prospect could be a decent investment "if" he can once and for all stay healthy.

I realize its a big if.....but.

I believe Espinoza was tossed after that one inning for having a foreign substance on the ball or his person.  Seems like he should be back soon since this should not disqualify him for the season.  Espinoza has looked very good at times and very hittable at other times.  Main thing is keeping him healthy, which also is the goal with Lawson.  Hadn't heard or seen any issue with Lawson's pitching just a lot of inconsistency, like Espinoza, so placement on the IL was a surprise.  With Gore still fighting control problems, our projected 3 top arms are showing they are not quite ready to contribute any time soon.   Hopefully, Gore will get back on the mound soon.

Someone to keep an eye out for as potential add to the winter roster (or a trade chip): Michell Miliano. He is a 21 year old RHRP out of the Dominican (signed in 2017) … listed at 6’3”. Just got promoted from LE to FW.

Don’t know a lot about him except the promotion and a impressive but risky stat line in 2021.

25.2 innings at LE.

First the bad: 21 walks in 25.2 might be considered bad, but

The good (real good): 52 strikeouts in 25.2 innings is impressive and even more considering a lowly .167 BAA.

We will see how he fares in High A … but he has the profile of someone that would be taken in Rule 5 and at 21 (if he gains some command) a ML level RP / closer.

Going to be a “tight” 40 man over the winter … so a tough fit.

Another pitching prospect to keep an eye on. Matt Waldron now in AA.

Madfriars (and others have taken note and commented).

24 year old college type taken in around the 18th round by Cleveland in 2019 after a career that had him sliding between starting and relief in College. Not someone to focus on. Cleveland used him in Rookie ball in relief ... as good but a college pitcher in rookie ball should be good. Cleveland threw him in as part of the Clevinger deal as the PTNL (also not encouraging for his evaluation).

Going into 2021 he was a low 90s FB and slider type and started off well in A ball (again as may college types do if they have good command but get blown up at the higher levels). BUT WAIT, apparently he added a knuckleball this spring ... and it is good ... and he can control it for strikes. Little stress on the arm so can pitch forever ... pitch count means little.

HMMM ... maybe still a unique pitch for minor leaguers generating success ... OR we found lightning in a bottle and a new legit prospect has emerged (we will see after more AA starts).

Lets be real optimistic (or pessimistic if that is the view) ... given the Padres issues at SP (quality and length) combined with the lack of near term prospects that will step up in 2021 (see Knehr' struggles as the best option) ... could we end up seeing Waldron pulling a 2020 Weathers' move and get called up out of nowhere?

Just a thought.

Keith Law's Top 50 Minors Rankings

2. CJ Abrams - Basically said he was the only other guy in consideration for 1-1. Says he'd be a top 5 prospect if he was only a 60 runner.

25. Gore - Says he still has the best stuff of anyone in the minors, but need to see him back on the mound.

30. Hassell - Law thinks he could compete for batting titles and that he and Abrams could both be All-Stars in CF.

34. Campusano - Still likes his bat and thinks hell improve once he's playing every day.

Wow! 4 prospects in his top 34 … that is special.

... just FYI 🙂

Padres must be getting close to adding the recent draft picks to active rosters ... likely up against the 180 player limit ... so seeing some players being released (so far from ACL and FW from what I can tell). Off of FW are Harris (CF) and Curran (1B).

One other move is putting Lawson (SA) on the 60 day IL from the 7  day MiL IL ... think those on the 60 day are not counted against the limit. More concerning is the injury ... he was recovering from a March 2020 TJ surgery and came back to pitch this June (4 starts with minimal innings and poor results) ... now back to the 60 day IL. Anyone have an update on this injury?

By releasing Harris, could we be near Hassell bing moved to FW?
