From today's DFR ... neither Mears nor Barley have his own thread ... but they are getting close to deserving one 🙂
Joshua Mears connected on two mammoth homers as he wrapped up a series in which he clubbed four round-trippers in 20 at-bats. Perhaps as encouraging as the offensive barrage for the big man is that he struck out only three times over the last five games – though his season K rate is still just below 40%. Even with the contact problems, Mears owns an .828 OPS in his full-season debut.
Even by Jordy Barley‘s standard, Sunday was a wild game. The dynamic shortstop drew walks in each of his final three trips to the plate, then swiped five bases – and only missed out on the chance to steal third base again because he advanced on a wild pitch. Barley has now converted on 18 of 19 attempts on the year. On the other end of the spectrum, the 21-year-old flubbed an easy pop fly behind second base for his minors-worst 19th error in 32 games in the field.

What a start to 2021!
Sure hope this is a sign he has made that major leap in development … Padres will need some real corner OF options in the next few years post Pham next season and post Myers the following year.

With all the prospects being traded away we really needed some "under the radar" guys to step up.
Some that have:
SP-Ethan Elliott
OF-Jack Suwinski
C-Jonny Homza
Any other candidates?

Euribiel Angeles .... INF for LE. He just turned 19 and I think he is the youngest player in the Low A West. Hitting .271 (good for is level of experience) ... he is making the big jump from the DSL in 2019 and not playing in 2020.
Looks as though the bat to ball skills are there ... so can hope there is the development physically and with experience to get the power set up.
P.S. Suwinski hit another HR yesterday ... not to 11 for the season.

Well being six weeks into the minor league season ... should be getting close to start debate over "promoting" some players based on their performance.
None of the Padres affiliates are stocked with a full roster of plus prospects ... so no real blockage. Plus, after missing a 2020 season, there may be a desire to accelerate the moves up a level for the players that appear to have quickly mastered their current levels.
I could see Hassell up to High A and Elliott up to AA mid-season.

AZ Rookie ball starts on the 28th. Padres are still listed as having two teams ... but unless they bring a bunch of players in from the DSL ... not sure how they fill two rosters (even with sliding players between the two).
From what I see ... they may have the bare minimum to field two position player rosters but clearly not enough pitchers. With the draft not happening until the second week of July ... then getting the draftees signed and in camp and back to playing shape ... may not get a full infusion of players until late July.

Arizona Complex League website indicates Padres have only one team. That team's current roster was just combining the players of the previous two teams, that were not otherwise assigned to A level, at the end of the 2019 season. League has been very slow putting out information and has not even published a schedule - all that has been said is that 28 June is opening day and there is a countdown to opening day on the website.
Seems like the Dominican Summer League has teams in place but information is even less forthcoming from that league. Players currently listed on the Padres DSL roster are mostly those from the 2019 season but with several 2020 and 2021 signees. It seems a lot of the players the Padres signed from 2018-2021 are somewhere in a holding pattern. Should be interesting to see if the league actually does operate this year and who will be on the opening day roster.

Last info I saw:
AZL … Padres 1 team … Jun 28 - Sep 18
DSL … Padres 1 team … Jul 12 - Oct 2
Not sure if it has to do with MLB taking over the minor leagues coupled with all the pandemic issues … but communication / reporting on these two leagues has been poor.
Would add the MiLB website format changes have been sub-optimal given how I use them.
