Minor League Discussion

Plus Machado could opt out and we may need to move Tatis to 3b.......in a few years he may have out grown SS anyway.

His Pops certainly added weight/muscle as he aged in the league also.

Looked alot like Jr. when he first came up and more like Nelson Cruz a few years later If I recall correctly.

Yep, projecting the body (and development) of a 21 year old out 3-4 years is not all that exact of a science ... but his father is a good template. So, need to be open to all the alternatives ... for the good of the team.

I missed this when it happened ... in case you did too ...

  • Padres signed RHP Jerad Eickhoff to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Eickhoff struggled to a 5.71 ERA over 58 1/3 innings (10 starts, two relief appearances) last season with the Phillies. The 29-year-old right-hander had a lot of success early on in his career, but he's become very prone to injuries and will probably open the 2020 campaign as nothing more than minor league depth for San Diego.

Didn't know where to put this information, but I wanted to share some research I did on the Padres current minor league players.  Some of these players surely will be waived while others may are signed to fill out rosters this year or will be traded but as of 1/25/20 this is the status of the organization.

Potential Rule 5 eligibles: 57 players, consisting of 29 position players and 28 pitchers.

Potential Minor League Free Agents: 45 players, consisting of 18 position players and 27 pitchers.

Included in the Rule 5 eligibles are:  Luis Patino, Taylor Trammell, Hudson Potts, Gabriel Arias, Reggie Lawson,  Tirso Ornelas, Jeisson Rosario, Tucupita Marcano, Jordy Barley, Justin Lopez, Eguy Rosario, Agustin Ruiz, Osvaldo Hernandez and Evan Miller.

Included in the potential FA list are:  Henry Henry, Hansel Rodriguez, Pedro Avila, Miguel Diaz, Allen Cordoba and Ivan Castillo.

Given the depth of the Padres farm system, it will be a very interesting to see who is protected and who is exposed at the conclusion of the 2020 minor league seasons.  I'm heading up to Lake Elsinore and maybe even to Texas to see some of these guys perform beyond Spring Training workouts.  It should be an exciting and competitive year - my only hope is that they all remain or regain full competitive health.

I would also bet on some of these guys getting traded at some point before next offseason as 2 or 3 for 1 pieces for other further away from RuleV pieces or even MLB "ready now" piece or 2 --

I believe Pedro Avilla was DFA and then resigned as he is recovering from TJ.  Technically he would be a FA but I wouldnt be worried.

This year is the year a lot of us knew was coming as that big crop of J2 guys become Rule V eligible.  Patino and Trammell are locks, but other than them, I am not sure how worried the Padres are about the others at this point in time.  Arias would get claimed in a second but have a feeling he wont be in the system by midseason.  Lawson cant stay healthy but here is to hoping he finally does.

Then Ornelas' swing and Rosario's power will be two of the major things to see in ST.  If Ornelas can play like he did at the end of the season he will jump back up prospect charts, same with if Rosario can even hit 5-10 HR a season (he hit 3 last year).  If its a no from either, I doubt they even get claimed.

Not really concerned about the Padres ability next November to protect the major prospects that have the risk of being protected in the Rule 5. Don't recall the Padres losing that many ML "regulars" via the Rule 5.

Every year we identify prospects we like ... worry about losing them ... Padres leave them exposed ... they don't get selected. Think the front office can handle this and protect the "real" prospects that have a high risk of being selected (and kept).

10 months is a long way off ... FA, trades, and DFA will clear a lot of slots ... not to worry.

Nice work Randy!    This is definitely "the" year where that huge International class becomes eligible.

I'm near certain that, in response to that, the Padres shaped their 2017 draft around it so they would not also have a huge # of collegiate players reaching R5 eligibility at the same time (probably more about placement in system, 2nd AZL team, etc).   Pads first 5 rounds + their comp pick in 2017 ALL were HS players; their first Collegiate player drafted was Aaron Leasher in the 6th round (Nick Margevicius was their 7th).

A quick glance reveals Leasher or 25th rounder Robbie Podorsky as the best college players from 2017 remaining in the system.  So no likely adds to 40-man from the 2017 Collegians at least.

But at moment looks like 4 near locks to protect:  Patino, Trammell, Gabe Arias, Reggie Lawson.  Plus guys not needing to be who either will (Gore) or may be (Owen Miller, etc)

With Richards, Profar, and Yates FA to be ... a quick 3 slots. Garcia and/or France may be on the bubble if Cronenworth looks good and Miller / Quiroz are not added in 2020 (can be added if need before 2021). Hedges or Torrens would be on the bubble with Mejia in as one of the catchers and Campusano in AAA. The RP fade in and out but always have some trade value ... think Perdomo and Reyes at a minimum but another season will tell a lot about Guerra, Bednar, and Wingenter.

They can cover six adds easily if they are worth it.

Agree.... sort of.  Where protecting the Intl class of 2016 is really going to come to a head is the 100% diametrically opposed goal of trying to be MLB contenders in 2020.   Have to factor in that  Pads will likely look to add FA/Trade for at least +1-2 guys.  But the main thing is, can't protect "elite upside 2B coming off batting title... in low-A" or "75 FB, 40 Control in AA RP's" that are R5 eligible when trying to construct a championship roster.... CAN when you just won 64 games & rebuilding.

...Only 12(?) guys selected R5 this year, but the 10 worst teams in MLB in 2020 will be scouting Pads systems esp 2nd 1/2; we can't protect them all; near certain to lose more than "Trevor Megill" next year.

Sidebar, but our tight roster has led to 4 Waiver claims so far in offseason.  No great losses, obviously, but 3 of the 4 did go to playoff contending teams.
