Quote from fenn68 on January 20, 2020, 7:27 amActually his K-rate is not all that worrisome for a very young inexperienced player in high A ball .... 25-27%. Sort of in the Javier Baez / Trevor Story range ... so if he can field at an elite level and hit ... the K% even if it does not improve is workable. MLB average for SS is 21% K-rate ... so not that far away.

Quote from fenn68 on January 20, 2020, 10:01 amPadres have no 2B on MLBPipeline's top 10.
Edwards comes in at #4 .... 55 overall rating .. plus hitting, running, fielding .... 2B's arm ... and a "30" for power.

Quote from sportwarrior on January 20, 2020, 1:16 pmXavier Edwards is a guy that's got a long way to go before he can become a solid, every day contributor at the major league level. Not just from a skills perspective, but from a size perspective. He's listed at 5'10/175, and guys, that's generous. When I saw him in person at ST last year, he looked maaybe 5'9/155. The dude is a TINY player. That's probably good for his speed, but man, I just don't see him lasting a full season as a starter.

Quote from fenn68 on January 20, 2020, 1:26 pmQuote from hoffy51 on January 20, 2020, 1:04 pmIf George Arias can hit in AA, he can easily more to second base.
Or Abrams who I expect will show up on the Top 10 SS list and given his projection maybe take an accelerated Tatis type advancement ... 2022?
On the optimistic side ... in 2022-23 there could be an interesting debate where Tatis, Arias, Abrams play defensively. IF Arias hits and is legitimately that Gold Glove caliber SS ... he might move Tatis off SS since Tatis is not all that consistent defensively now and in 3 years he has the body that should bulk up (more like his father). Tatis to 2B and Abrams to the OF?
With Pham gone after 2021 and Margot / Myers gone after 2022 ... expect one to be an OF given not a lot of certainty on the OF candidates who will be around then.

I mean, he's going to be 48 before the season starts, so that might be a stretch...

As long as Tatis keeps playing at anything near the level that he has already shown, he will be our SS. If Arias and Abrams want to play, they will have to learn other positions. Any GM, coach or manager who tries to force Tatis off of SS would be beheaded by ownership. Tatis is the future franchise cornerstone. He wants to play SS. Done. Mike Trout would be much better in LF at this point. Do you think any employee of the Angels has ever dared to even mention such a thing to him?

Well, the Cubs took All-Star 3B Bryant and used him in the OF ... for the good of the team. Balt/LAD took All-Star and Gold Glove 3B Machado to SS in his 6th year ... for the good of the team. LAD has locked in All-Star / MVP candidate at 1B ... or is it CF ... or is it RF ... for the good of the team. Cleveland moved All-Star / MVP candidate Ramirez between 2B, SS, OF, and 3B since he arrived in the ML ... for the good of the team.
So, would not be all that certain that Tatis not going to be moved to a different position ... for the good of the team ... when a better defensive SS (who can hit) alternative presents itself. Tatis' offense will play at any position but his 2019 defense at SS was statistically low.
Not an issue for maybe 3 years and probably will require either a clearly top flight SS prospect or / and the lack of development defensively by Tatis.
Call back in 2022-23.
