Minor League Discussion

How hot is Gabriel Arias right now?

The kid has 2 triples and a home run tonight.

19 hits in his last 10 games.

When you think that it was his defense that made him a prospect and his bat was the only question.....how far up

our top 30 can this guy go?

That LE team with Córdoba/Edwards/Campusano/Arias at the top of the order is pretty exciting.

Given his 2019 offensive performance on top of his reported elite defense at SS ... should easily be a Top 10. The second half has been outstanding (hopefully a sign of development): 203 AB ....365/403/552 ... is not a small sample size.

Additionally, at 19, he is 6 months younger than Edwards who has impressed making it successfully to LE in just a year after being drafted out of HS.

Looking as though around 2022 the Padres will have some difficult roster decisions as Arias, Edwards, Campusano, Córdoba ... and maybe Abrams are all pounding on the door for ML playing time.

2 more hits for Arias today including another home run!

Wow!

Javy Guerra made his AA debut ... couple of walks but no runs ... decent debut with is plus FB playing at the upper level. Considering this is the first year of conversion to a RP and somewhat shorten with injury ... very impressed with his effectiveness.

With the need in MLB for effective RP (and the high burn out rate) ... Guerra is making a strong case to be kept on the 40 man roster this winter and then if he looks at all ML ready the 26 man out of ST ... he is out of minor league options.

Upper 90s FB and displayed decent command in LE ... should be worth the time working with Balsley to advance his development. Not as though the Padres have a slam dunk set of RP going into 2020. Think he has a chance to be better than whomever is tracking to be the #7 or #8 RP on the 2020 staff.

Since I tend to like comparative analysis to be a part of evaluating players ....  consider the LE trio of hitting prospects. In the CAL LEAGUE batting average leaders:

1. Campusano (.321) as a catcher ... strong all season

3. Arias (.309) as a SS with high defensive rep ... red hot in the second half

5. Córdoba (.296) in a utility role

Impressive as that is being 1, 3, and 5 ... consider that 2, 4, 5, and 7 are all from that hitter”s heaven of Lancaster. We are talking best in the league for a full season and Campusano and Arias are really young while Córdoba is about average but just rebounding from a pretty lost 2018 due to injury.

Does this elevate Cordoba’s chance of being added to the 40 man ... he is the versatile, athletic style of player that is sought after these day? Don’t have a need yet with either Campusano or Arias.

Note: Edwards does not have the CalLeague ABs to quality but would be #1 if he did.

Same theme for hitters in the Texas League:

#1 Castillo ... SS/2B ... maybe a marginal prospect but still

#5 Torrens ... C .. another catcher than can hit

#6 Olivares .... OF ... defensive skills at all three slots with some power, speed

#7 Miller .... SS/2B ... first full season makes this very impressive

Again four legit prospects (and still young) near the top of the league for a full season is a very strong showing. Maybe none are projected as “elite” ML talents but a team does need quality starters and bench options ... combine this group with the LE group and filling out the 26 man roster going forward maybe be creating some strong depth ... plus some strong trade chip if needed.

Whats great is that these guys all all(except maybe Campusano) way down on our prospect list.

We have guys in the teens and twenties who are improving and surging up the rankings.

I guess they are taking the place of some guys(Reed,Potts) who have dropped but still....sometimes guys drop

and the guys replacing them are doing it by default.

Plus I haven't given up on Potts yet...he's been hitting better as of late.

But Reed is the guy I was really counting on getting better.....he hasn't.

Sometimes great athleticism just isn't enough (Tre Carter).

Anyone else starting to get deeply concerned about Taylor Trammell? Is he hurt? Did the Reds move him because they saw something? Can't believe Pads scouting would miss like this. I mean they are clearly quite competent based on past moves as a whole. Hope he is pressing and/or minor injury.

Not overly. First trade of his life. It was mid season as well. He is still fairly young for the league. And probably just trying to impress the new org. Ask me again the middle of next season, we will have better information to go on by then.

According to CBS Sports website, both Luis Campusano and Owen Miller have been selected to play in the AZ Fall League.
