2 takeaways:
1) That IS a ridiculous leg kick! Glad they're working on reigning it in.
2) Kid needs to attack the strike zone. Let him throw pitches he's really confident he can get over the plate( must be at least one?) Once he sees he can throw strikes consistently, then incorporate the rest.
We DESPERATELY need this kid to be the guy he's been hyped to be.

ACL Padres 6, ACL Diamondbacks 1
Key Statistics: CF-RF James Wood 1-for-3, 2 RBI, SB, BB; Max Ferguson 2-for-4, 2 R: LHP MacKenzie Gore (W, 1-0) 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
Prospect Watch: MacKenzie Gore‘s second outing in the desert provided more good news as the ACL Padres tamed the Diamondbacks in Peoria. Gore was charged with three hits, though two were infield singles, and he issued three walks and a pair of wild pitches, but the former third overall pick kept the Diamondbacks off the scoreboard. Gore’s stretched out to 5.2 innings in the appearance and now has 15 strikeouts in 10.1 one-run innings. A return to El Paso may be on the horizon, where the Whiteville, North Carolina product’s mechanical overhaul and command figure to face a stern test.

The story of the day was MacKenzie Gore‘s third outing in the desert. He worked six solid innings. Gore did allow seven hits – all singles but he didn’t allow a walk and struck out seven. Four of the hits and both runs came in his final inning of work. The 22-year-old has a 1.65 ERA in 16.1 innings in the complex league. Perhaps more importantly, Gore has walked just four batters. For context, Gore walked 12 batters in 20 Triple-A innings before being sent to Arizona to make some mechanical adjustments. It’s easy to dismiss Gore’s performance against ACL opponents, but reports on his fastball command have been encouraging. It seems likely that his next outing will be in full-season ball, with El Paso being the most likely destination.

Quote from LynchMob on September 6, 2021, 9:49 amFrom today's DFR ... I don't like the sound of this ... but I'm rooting for him ... and the Padres sure need him ...
MacKenzie Gore got off to a rocky start, issuing three walks and surrendering three runs in his first inning back in full-season ball, but the lefty bounced back and allowed just two more baserunners over the next four frames. Gore, coming off three outings against overmatched complex league batters and a two-month hiatus trying to rediscover what made him the game’s top pitching prospect 18 months ago, labored through 30 pitches in that first frame, missing with fastball command frequently. He averaged just 13 pitches over each of the next four innings though and got strike one on 11 of the final 14 batters he faced. With two weeks left for all the affiliates except El Paso, Gore will get a few more opportunities to get squared away this season.

Quote from LynchMob on September 13, 2021, 10:27 amBA's spin is a bit more optimistic than my first impression ...
Double-A San Antonio LHP MacKenzie Gore (Padres) pitched five solid innings for one of his best outings of a very disappointing season. He was left out there to start the sixth and walked three straight batters before being pulled, dinging his final line (5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 8 SO)

Quote from Randy Manese on September 20, 2021, 11:15 amBA's spin was a bit misleading. If you were able to watch the game, you would have seen his facial expressions of doubt and anxiety. Against a mostly RH hitting line-up, he was pitching down and away to almost every batter, rarely challenging them inside or in the upper part of the strike zone. Seagle, who is probably one of the best defensive catchers around (unfortunately he is offensively challenged) tried to get him to be more aggressive with his FB but Gore seemed to want to throw more slow stuff - curves, sliders and an occasional change-up, which was less effective because he didn't through the FB enough. Seagle did a good job of framing some border-line pitches but most of Gore's offerings were good enough to get major league hitters out if mixed properly with hard stuff - I believe he did get up to 96 or 97 on the few occasions he really brought it. Gore is not a flamethrower, so he must not be afraid to locate, especially inside and changes speeds/eye level off that 92-94 FB.
This, to me, shows a lack of confidence and led to those walks by him being so cautious as to not leave something good over the plate. He definitely is not ready for the majors mentally right now - physically, he seemed there. For that reason, I think you give him a break until instructs, put him on the 40 man to keep him from Rule 5 and hope he regains what made him a high draft choice in 2017. He has the ability, just needs to believe in his stuff again.

Quote from fenn68 on September 20, 2021, 12:30 pmAgree he needs the winter instructs and ST to get to the next level. Still concerned about his command … 89 pitches in 5 innings in AA not ideal.
I will hedge (because I have no insight) on his pitch usage in AA. Is it possible that the organization has a structured plan on layering in stages of development of his approach … not the ML level plan … but for now a plan that focuses on certain pitches to improve them. Change the approach when he “masters” the improvements in his weaknesses.
I recall discussions in the past on other pitchers who could dominate lower levels with an elite pitch being instructed to not rely on that and work in their other options that need improvement. May hurt their “stats” at their current level but may make them better for the next level.
Don’t know … but an alternate spin.

The No. 56 overall prospect certainly found his footing in his first Arizona Fall League start for Peoria, scattering two earned runs on six hits and a walk over five strong innings in the Javelinas’ 6-5 loss at Salt River on Wednesday.
Gore threw 88 pitches -- 56 for strikes -- including 11 swings-and-misses. That ability to find the zone consistently may have brought a sigh of relief to the Padres and their fans.
...
Gore's fastball sat in the mid-90s and touched as high as 98.2 mph in the third inning on the Statcast radar gun, giving him the hardest-thrown pitch of the game. A fifth-inning 97.8 mph heater was second-highest among all Peoria and Salt River pitchers. Perhaps it was no coincidence that both offerings came against Spencer Torkelson, the 2020 first overall Draft pick and the highest-ranked overall prospect in this year’s AFL.
