Being sick is hardly drama especially in these times. If you have the sniffles you are not getting put under.

What makes this a soap opera is the continuing “events” that could happen to anyone but they all seem to be happening to Tatis. The basic structure of a soap opera.

Injuries … happening since AA … shoulder / back / hamstring as a player can happen to anyone but that is a lot concentrated with Tatis in a short time. Falling off a motor cycle and breaking a wrist can happen to anyone … but it happened to Tatis. Getting or not getting surgery on the shoulder is a common decision point but the yes or no became an issue with Tatis. Rehabbing is something all injured do but not following the team’s plan and going on his own agenda is the route Tatis took. Now add getting sick and not being able to get the scheduled surgery (happens to some) but following all the other stuff it happened to Tatis.

So, a soap opera of “unfortunate events” … not necessarily his fault but nonetheless the plot of a soap opera.

I agree with you to a point. This is a classic case of "where much is given, much is expected". We must not forget he is literally still a kid. I can vividly remember lots of things I was doing that would make Tatis look like an angel in comparison. You can argue that I wasn't handed millions so it's different. I would argue that Tatis didn't ask for all this either. They were given due to his natural charisma and all of us fans, management, the sport wanting to exploit his God given talents for our entertainment or business prospects. At the end of the day he is human. My anger with him is more about his behavior like a spoiled brat but we must also admit that we all enabled it. Tough love should have been shown much earlier in the process. It's too easy to spank him now but we (fans, management, the sport) must take responsibility for our role in it as well.

If it had just been this, then yeah, give him a pass. But after the motorbike/wrist, then the steroids, .......

I'll jump back on the Tatis Jr. bandwagon when he's a contributing member of our favourite baseball team. Until then, kid needs help doing the right thing. Hopefully being in SD all winter, he'll find it.

We cannot blame him for being sick, true. The problem is that Tatis has been a trainwreck all year. Motorcycle accident?  I don't know if he had language in his contract restricting this activity, but it needed to be TAKEN CARE OF. He hid it and didn't get his injuries checked out or fixed. Him missing half the year was all on him. Him taking steroids and getting suspended was all on him. If he had a normal job he would have been fired twice already just this year. I was working at his age. I didn't get fired. Being young is not an excuse. If he was raised spoiled and stupid that is his father's fault, not the Padres.

We have to move on, fine. But when a young person commits 2 HUGE, MAJOR F-UPS in one year the last thing you do is go easy on him. He put out a decent apology. Now it is time for him to live up to that apology.

LATEST NEWS

Aug. 30: SS Fernando Tatis Jr. has shoulder surgery delayed
Tatis was slated to undergo surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder on Tuesday, but that procedure was postponed because Tatis is feeling under the weather with a non-COVID illness, the team said. The Padres have yet to reschedule Tatis' surgery, but it is expected to take place in the next week or so and shouldn't affect the timing of his return.

Tatis dealt with multiple subluxations of his shoulder last season, which forced him to miss game action. This surgery would address that issue, though it comes with a recovery time of 4-6 months. It's possible Tatis' start to Spring Training would be slightly delayed. But by the time his 80-game suspension runs out, the team expects Tatis to have long since recovered from the operation.

The Unraveling of Fernando Tatis Jr.

As the playoffs begin, the San Diego Padres are missing one of the most exciting players in baseball. A look back at 20 months in which a limitless future turned into a question mark.

Tatis just had another surgery on his wrist … supposedly for greater long term stability the removed two screws and replaced the with one as I understand.

Timeline for recovery is reported aligned with the surgery recovery from the shoulder surgery which in theory is within the suspension timeframe.

Shouldnt be an issue with the bigger glove he will be wearing in LF! 😉

Guys I honestly don't see FTJ anywhere but the infield. He's just TOO dynamic a player to cast him away to the OF.

We saw the lackluster performance when they stuck him out there last year.

I realise he's been a total f**k up this year but he's still going to be a generational talent when he returns( which gets earlier with every game played!)

Either he'll be at SS( as solid as Kim has been, he just doesn't cover as much ground)  or maybe even 1B( who else we got???).

I just can't wait to get his bat back at top of the order. Imagine if Melvin gets clever enough to move Soto BEHIND Machado? We go FTJ, Cronenworth, Manny, Soto......that is a recipe for success.

I dont know if you listened to the broadcast during the NYM series, however the announcers were talking about how SD brass was already talking to Tatis about being in the OF. They mentioned CF, and had Tatis came back during the regular season along with the underperformance of Grisham and Azocar, they were looking to get his bat in there. However, with Grish's performance so far during the playoffs, and his defensive ability, I see Grisham at least starting 2023 as the favorite in CF due to defense.

You know Trout is a pretty dynamic/generational talent, and he plays OF! Same with Soto. What it boils down to is this. While Tatis may have more range than Kim, Kim is more reliable defensively than Tatis. Tatis makes way too many errors at SS. And finally, this is the big point, he has lost his right/ability to have any say where he plays. He needs to embrace the OF and become the best LFer in MLB. Then, when Kims contract is up, and depending on how Tatis has matured, and does/does not like the OF, then we can discuss bringing him back to the grass. But at that point, Merrill should be close to the ML as well.
