Fernando Tatis, Jr

Tatis’ defensive analytics are nowhere close to Kim … including range. Consider 2019-2022:

Stat ………………………… Kim …. Tatis:

Innings:                           1352 … 2027

Defensive Runs Saved:    19 ….…. -9

ErrorR:                              2.3 …. -5.9

UZR/150 (range):           4.6 …. -7.1

WAR:                                12.2 …  5.4 (double the WAR in 60% of the innings)

Basically the analytics don’t support Tatis’ image he earned as SS. COULD he become an elite defensive SS … sure … but in a playoff battle for 2023 and an in-house better defensive option and an alternative slot of need for Tatis … Tatis to the OF seems inevitable.

At the end of the season would have thought CF was a slam dunk but with the showing of Grisham in the playoffs offensively and defensively plus Melvin’s preference for plus defense should get Grisham the first look in CF with Tatis to LF.

Doubt he remains in LF long term … but a lot will depend on the moves with others.

Grisham may just go sub-.200 and get bumped out of CF … Tatis to CF?

Soto is a FA after 2024 will he re-sign … Tatis to RF?

Kim has two years of control will he re-sign … Tatis to SS

Cronenworth has three years of control will he re-sign … Tatis to INF if Kim is re-signed

Then throw-in Merrill (if he develops) should be at the latest in 2026 to match Cronenworth’s departure or optimistically 2025 to match Kim’s departure. Of Merrill may be move to corner OF shifting Tatis to CF to match Grisham’s FA in 2026.

Of course we have no idea who else Preller adds that mixes the pot. So by 2025 we should be confident Tatis is in LF or CF or RF or SS or 2B or 1B … or if Manny opts out 3B. Probably not catcher. How about considering his arm pull an Otani and DH/pitcher? Padres control him for a very long time so today’s thinking is only good for today.

I guess we'll see when he finally comes back.

I'd be surprised if he's in the OF.

As for Trout, Angels have never asked him to swap positions,....and never will.

Other than a 2 1/2 month stretch last year when he had the yips throwing to 1b he’s just fine at SS.

Luckily we have Kim cause this is a good problem to have.

Will all depend on his health and BoMel and how where he plays affects his offense.

They will, probably be the end of the 2023 season. His legs and back are starting to go, you will see him in LF sooner than later.

Question for you all

Seeing as Tatis is suspended for PED and can have ZERO contact with the team.....should he get a share of the playoffs money and a ring when the Padres win the whole thing ?

He probably should not get money (but doesn't matter to me if he does), but I think you have to give him a ring.  You don't want to be petty with your franchise player.  He messed up and he knows it, but personally I think getting a ring that I didn't earn would really motivate me to get one that I did (obviously not getting one could also motivate).

brent wolff and Jeremy Hill have reacted to this post.

In fairness to all the players and staff that actually contributed to winning in 2022 ... don't cheapen the awards ... would not give money / ring to Tatis just to "keep him happy" while probably irritating some of the players who really worked to win. Really don't want further create negative clubhouse ... and after the PED is was clear that some players were not on Tatis' side and if you remember 2021 there was some tension around Tatis' attitude with some players (see Machado, a former coach).

Players vote the money shares so not the club decision ... no idea who decides on the rings but expect it is someone in the front office.

Personally if I was in Tatis's position, I would not want a ring anyway. He did nothing to contribute to the Wins, so why would you want one?

Perhaps I should have qualified the question.....yes Tatis is suspended and barred from any interaction with the team until spring training ( still suspended ) and still has to serve the remainder of the 80 games and has had zero impact on this year from a positive standpoint....plenty of negative to last a lifetime....he is still on the 40 man roster. Injured is one thing but suspended is a different breed of cat altogether.

So not only Tatis but anybody on the 40 man or is there a minimum days of MLB service that would be used ?

Pomeranz and Adams come to mind....anybody that actually played or pitched this year or players that contributed to the Padres getting to the post season.....Hosmer, Voit, Abrams, Gore etc

What should the base criteria be ?

On the 40 man roster in good standing  or just the 26 man roster for the playoffs ?
