Chris Paddack

I have a feeling they might move Strahm to the pen relatively soon (All Star Break?).   His innings limit has to be lower than CP, but he was extremely effective in pen last year too.  Could preserve him as a limited weapon theoretically into playoffs.

But on gut, just don't think they'll move Paddack to the pen.  Think they just try to keep juggling to keep him starting as long as the games are meaningful.  If truly or for practical purposes out of it, could see them just erring on side of caution and shutting him down all Sept when callups arrive; audition other guys instead.

Tough thing is if hopefully in thick of a pennant or (way more likely) Wild Card race; what do you do??

Just a hit of concern building re: Paddack.

In his last 4 starts, 3 have been against strong Division leaders (LAD, NYY, PHIL) and his results have been bad: 14 innings / 12 ER (7.70 ERA). In his other 8 starts (against lesser teams) he sports an ERA around 1.50.

A couple of ways to look at this:

1. Paddack's stuff is good enough to hand mediocre / bad hitting teams but the top teams can handle him.

2. Has the word on Paddack gotten around the league and other teams are coming up with a game plan to deal with his stuff?

Maybe it is my perception driven by the result but it seems that Paddack's command has been off in recent starts and he is missing his location in the zone by a lot. Even good stuff in a bad location can get hammered by good hitters.

I didn't see much of yesterday's start, but when I watched a few innings of his start against the Yankees Paddack's stuff looked quite a bit tamer than it normally did.  I wasn't seeing quite as much run on either his change OR his fastball. Last night I did manage to catch a few change ups that darted down through and out of the zone, but I didn't see any of the pitches that yielded hits.

I read that the Yankees were sitting on his change up, which seems odd to me since that seems to be by far his hardest pitch to hit between the movement and drop in velocity.

His stuff still looks good....a little adversity may be good for him.

Get it out of the way this year.

Chris Paddack optioned to A Ball.

Robert Stock recalled.

Is this strictly to reduce innings?

Will he be recalled soon?

I would have to think a little of both to reduce work load, and work on hitting better spots with the fast ball. He has been a little too much plate the last 3-4 starts.

A friend of mine, Padres' fan, whose "scouting" opinion I trust and respect, watched the Braves/Cards game yesterday and texts me to say ... "Soroka is noticeably better than Paddack" ... and that's consistent with the media scouting reports that I've read.  And I don't think we, as a group, perceive Paddack as our future #1 ... that's Gore ... with hope that Patino is also better than Paddack.  Paddack will make a great #3 ... or even #4 if we sign a free agent SP that's better ...

I think that opinion of Paddock will change as/if his curveball develops more, and if he can develop a good 4th pitch, such as a slider. At the start of this season, he was basically considered a two pitcher pitcher. And yes, those normally dont go to far as a dominant starter. His level of dominance and hierarchy in a rotation will be based on further development of additional pitches. Always has been.
