Some players are going home and some are staying...they are worried like a lot of people about their families, paychecks  etc

When they play ...they play.......there is a bigger issue than baseball going on and a test doesn't mean a thing....negative today....get infected tomorrow then test positive ?

The decision has already been made by MLB so your questions are moot

What decision has been made you are speaking of?

All I heard is they have temporarily delayed the season.

I apologize if I’m behind on announcements by MLB.

Maybe play by June 1st if everything went well in regard to getting through/past this virus. I could see a revised schedule that has no inter league play at all....straight NL vs NL and AL vs AL

Straight NL schedule from June 1st would be 102 games...if you added in the inter league games scheduled ( 14 ) you would have a 116 game season and lose 46 games overall.

I could also see them tweaking the schedule to say 125 and add in some doubleheaders so that every team had the same amount of games and still keep the same type of post season schedule.

Lots of "Ifs" for sure with the biggest being what is the swath of damage left in the wake of this National Emergency and any time frame proposed ? This is a very fluid situation for the entire world with baseball being a spec of sand in the eyes of some people.

Just for general principle....The Padres should be declared World Champions because they have the most COOL uniforms in MLB this year .....just sayin 🙂

Go Padres....2020 ish !

Y'all stay safe 😉

Well that’s why I was asking what others thought......lots of if’s.

Then you said “The decision has already been made by MLB so your questions are moot”.

Was just wondering what I missed and why we couldn’t discuss the possibilities.

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter 3finger.

The following is a bit of a head scratcher ... at least for me but apparently not for Manfred and some of the owners.

Listening to a national reporter commenting on some of the current thinking ... even if the season slips to early June ... the league wants to play the full 162 game season! How ... adding a month to the end of the season ... minimize off days ... even double headers. World Series may go the Thanksgiving and because of weather issues ... played in a neutral site such as the dome in AZ.

The other thought is from the go ahead to resume training the teams would just use a couple of weeks in their own home towns ... not go to AZ/FLA ... no ST games ... then just start.

Just don't see it but maximizing revenue is quite an incentive for everyone ... so maybe?

Since I would expect that the league will want to maximize the games played every day ... they have to retain the inter-league play with 15 teams in each league. If play was only within the league, a team in each league would not be playing each day. A lot of lost revenue with teams losing weekend games.

I still think go to a revised schedule with 20 games agains Division opponents (80 games) and filling out the rest of the needed games (assuming a lot less than 162) with inter-league opponents works the best. Actually would set up the NL West with the AL West ... playing home and home with each of the inter-league teams (the number can fluctuate as needed). But say 5 teams X 6 games gets another 30 taking the total to 110. Make it 8 games and get to 120. A better competitive balance with each NL West team playing the same opponents the same number of games. An added economic value is that travel would be reduced (no cross country trips) plus fan could more easily travel to AL West venues and TV/Radio exposure would be better in prime time (maybe more of a value on the East Coast).

Actually could spark more interest in the NL playoffs with Division winners and wild cards playing each other for the first time this year (harkens back to the World Series pre inter league play). Adding intrigue.

On the surface the problem is easy, the answer is extremely complicated.  The problem with picking up wherever we start the season is it gets rid of the equity in baseball.  As someone noted either on here or twitter, the Padres have a fairly easy April with no games against LA.  Some teams might protest against picking up the schedule where it is (not to mention some teams will end up with more home games depending on when).

The other issue with the answer is many fans have already bought single game tickets.  All NL teams outside of the West make one trip to SD a year.  If you are a fan of that team, you probably already bought those tickets, or planned your vacation.  Will fans be able to change everything if the team comes on a different date or doesnt come at all?

Not to mention the pay, how long does it last, etc...

IDK about you guys, but the thing getting me through this is knowing that there will be A LOT of baseball played into October/November.  We just need to survive until then.

If they plan on playing a bunch of doubleheaders they're gonna have to do something about the pitcher limits to the roster.

I assume they would.

Maybe allow a 28 man ML roster with no limit to pitchers just for 2020?

How and when do MLB players get paid?

If they get to play without fans, in order go get paid, is that an option?

I am sure that is a big discussion item between the league and the union.

My understanding (not confirmed) is that they start getting paid when the season gets started.

Would suspect that there will be no differentiation between fans / ball park workers / media workers and players ... so when it is “safe” for players to congregate and play it will be safe for a full start with fans.

Sure players will want that soon and would play on the back lots without fans to get paid ... but not much incentive for the league to pay them while not generating revenue from fans or likely TV coverage if media personnel are excluded. Not many tears will be shed for a league minimum player (almost $600,000) missing 1/2 a season and ONLY getting $300,000 while restaurant workers are having trouble paying bills.

Each team has committed 1 million dollars to be able to pay the team employees/ ball park workers etc during this delay but the players are a different story, Some teams are stepping up to take care of their minor league players and some aren't. My guess, and I do mean my guess, is that teams will pay players something based on when the season was supposed to start on a fractional dollar amount....Owners will probably get govt money back as an impacted industry. At this point nothing is off the table and anything to help the people that are baseball other than the MLB roster players is going to happen with MLB players also getting something
