Cancelled !

PreviousPage 3 of 14Next

BTW this is a HUGE issue with college and high school, and the draft.

I subscribe to BA and listen to the podcasts and what do these players and teams do?  From a HS seniors standpoint, this was going to be their year to showcase themselves as a top 3 round talent.  If you are a draft eligible sophomore or junior (college) do you return to college for another year to try and raise your stock?  If you do, even with the extra year of eligibility you are now 22/23 when being drafted and it would become REALLY hard to raise your stock.  If you were going to be a senior sign, you now have leverage to return to college, but at the same time, do you?  A 23 year old being drafted is considered ancient, and while not impossible, his stock takes a big hit.

If I am Preller (or any GM/scout) what do I do?  Lets say all this stuff clears up by May.  Both the HS and college season have been cancelled.  I might be able to hold workouts before the draft, but who knows if that will even be allowed.  If not, I still have scouting reports on players, but you havent seen them play in multiple months.  Do you have a Spring Training for the players you signed before the SS leagues start?  There are a lot of questions.

And again, I know this is a national emergency and health should be the #1 priority.  But at the same time, many of these players and GMs are totally healthy.  Even if they are in quarantine, what do they do for the next few weeks besides think about these issues?  The high school I teach at won their first CIF championship ever last year.  80% of that team was juniors, and this was going to be the year that they showed it wasnt a fluke and for multiple of them a chance to show they deserve a scholarship in college.  They played all of 5 games before the season was taken away from them.  The entire team is healthy (outside of a sprained ankle from our catcher).  Most of them were worried about the game two days ago being cancelled because of rain, now many of them will never play again (again despite being healthy).  They understand, but it is CRUSHING that your dream ends this way.

Have to accept the human condition of one’s family well being first ... and most will make their decisions on that premise. Whether that is immediate health or financial ... people will be self focused.

I had a labor relation’s professor years ago that brought that out when he stated that during World War II (maybe the single most patriotic period in the US) there were the most union strikes in the history of the US in a concentrated period.

Sure there are some who are more altruistic and are willing to sacrifice for the good of the others ... but don’t expect that as the norm when push comes to shove.

Just looked at the schedule.....and of course it’s not good for the Padres.

Let’s say they restart the season on May 1st.

Out of those 29 games lost”fifteen”of those games are against Colorado/SF/Detroit.

Of those 29 games lost “zero” are against the Dodgers.

Because Padres.

No one has any thoughts on starting the season and playing to empty stadiums?

Continuing ST without fans?

Test all team personnel and players and let them keep “practicing”.
They need to know if anyone has it anyway.

Some players are going home and some are staying...they are worried like a lot of people about their families, paychecks  etc

When they play ...they play.......there is a bigger issue than baseball going on and a test doesn't mean a thing....negative today....get infected tomorrow then test positive ?

The decision has already been made by MLB so your questions are moot

I think mlb is dreaming about this "delay." The CDC is saying that things are going to get worse before they get better.

No question about the incidents getting worse ... just impossible to model how worse (depends on how various folks define that) and how long the contagion is problematic for resuming somewhat normal activities as the new cases begin to drop ... as they have in China and appear to be in So. Korea.

An argument for being overly restrictive early to minimize the spread and allowing more time for dealing with the most vulnerable groups (elderly, compromised immune systems). Remember even 20 years olds can get the virus ... be "carriers" ... without displaying symptoms ... and capable of minimal adverse results.

=====

All the non-roster minor leaguers have been sent home ... and apparently a NYY minor leaguer has tested positive. As of now there likely is some negotiation with the union since per the CBA (as reported) the teams cannot send the 40 man roster types home. However, there are no group workouts ... player just work out on their own.

A May 1 return is maybe optimistic if some semblance of ST is needed before the season but the the arc in China is a template and the US has taken appropriate early moves ... May 1 still might work.

Hall of Fame closing down.

It will be fine.

But every business in Cooperstown depends on that museum.

They're screwed.

Not good losing games where the Padres needed to picking up the wins to be in contention.

No idea if MLB will go down this path but it is feasible to rework the schedule that preserves the full slate of games vs. a team's Division rivals at the the expense of games vs. non-Division teams ... a better competitive balance structure to determine Division winners at least. Also, for the benefit of some teams ... reset the balance of Home vs. Away games.

2019 Padre games vs. NLW (76) ... NLC (34) ... NLE (32) ... Inter-league (20). Have to keep the inter-league just to keep games going with leagues at 15 and 15.

So a baseline of NLW plus inter-league gets 96 games ... a fair competitive season against Division rivals and a fair home/away balance.  Then start adding home and home series vs. the other NL teams to move to the targeted full season level of games. Could also go to 80 in-Division games so all those series home and home can be balanced.

Simplistically ... loose 5 weeks and drop the NL East ... loose 10 weeks then additionally drop the NL Central. Not that simple but feasible if they start working on alternative scenarios now. Given the uncertainty of the timing ... build a schedule with Division opponents all packed into the second half of the season ... let's say after July 1 and the non-Division opponents earlier ... easy to then just drop them as delays continue yet still retain the competitive picture within Divisions.

MLB probably will not go that route ... but competitively that makes sense.

This is just pissing into the wind.....NOBODY has the first clue how this will shake out.....not even MLB

The COUNTRY is SHUTTING DOWN

If the Baseball Season is even played it is what it is

Anything else is just people talking to talk for something to do......Personally I have more serious problems because of this virus and how it affects my own family who work in education and  Professional teams than how many games against who might get played if any
