Around the League...non Padres
Quote from Brian Connelly on April 1, 2021, 11:29 amBednar might be the only guy from the 2020 Pads super psyched to get traded to the Pirates...
From "11 surprising players on O.D. rosters" (thought Marcano was going to be on there)
David Bednar, RHP, Pirates
This is a heartwarming one, because it’s always fun when the hometown kid makes good. Bednar is from Mars … no, not that one. The one just outside Pittsburgh. He was dealt to the Pirates from the Padres in the Joe Musgrove trade over the winter and, with a 6.75 ERA in 17 1/3 big league innings, didn’t figure to be an immediate option even on the rebuilding Bucs.
But Bednar wowed in camp by striking out 18 and walking just one in 8 2/3 scoreless innings to make the club as a potential high-leverage option. Martians are loving it.
Taylor Trammell, OF, Mariners
Fellow outfield prospects Jarred Kelenic and Julio Rodríguez get more attention, but Trammell, who was acquired by the M’s in a trade with the Padres last summer, is a legit talent himself (ranked No. 100 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects list). He demonstrated that with a .311/.392/.644 slash line in the Cactus League to earn a starting opportunity. With reigning AL Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis out with a right knee bruise, Trammell will likely be the starter in center field on Opening Day.

Pads haven't announced but seem certain to 60-day Michel Baez to open the spot for selecting Nabil Crismatt.
But with SOOO many guys on IL, I would not be surprised to see Preller playing the Waiver Claim/PBTNL trade game to get a little temporary depth and maybe being able to retain players in thinned out upper levels of Minors with subsequent early season DFA as guys come off IL...
Too many out of options guys already, so NO more-- Full Stop. But these guys all have 1 option left:
- Skye Bolt OF (27 y.o.) - A's. MLB.com #17 & BA #25 A's prospect, but they are one of the very worst systems. I'd say < O'Grady, but > all other AAA/AA non roster guys. "SH better from Left... teases with athletic skill set but yet to fully capitalize on it... keen eye at plate.... fringe-average hit tool... can play all 3 OF positions... 55 Run/Field/Arm... has struggled with injuries since being drafted. MLB debut last year: 1-10, 2B, BB. AAA Vegas 2019: .269/.350/.459
- Edgar Garcia RHRP (24) - Reds. Good ST & very good AAA & AA #'s in 2018-2019 (part time closer), but bad #'s in MLB with Philly in 2019 & cameo with Rays 2020
- Meibrys Viloria C (24) - Royals. ... has spent parts of the past three seasons with the Royals but managed only a combined .215/.266/.287 batting line through 201 trips to the plate. He batted .264/.334/.332 in 248 Double-A plate appearances in 2019 but hasn’t played a game at the Triple-A level, in part due to last year’s canceled minor league season. Viloria has never been expected to hit much, but he’s regarded as a sound defender with a rocket arm — a trait reflected in his career 34 percent caught-stealing rate.
Not sure the Padres would want to make a 40 man roster move to fit in any “marginal” insurance at this point ... plus given their claim position (near the end) the players would have been bypassed by a lot of “needy” teams .. not a major endorsement unless the Padres see some longer term value as apparently they did with Humphreys.

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 1, 2021, 2:36 pmJust need optionable depth at this point with 9 guys on IL-10 + 4 more on IL-60!
Only 1 healthy position player available on 40-man for a callup (O'Grady). More P's, but really no one "ready".
If you're going to put someone on IL-60 anyway (think they'd like to do so with Guerra to max his rehab time i.e. experience), might as well see if can stash another guy in our system if they help with org depth.
We're low in claim order, but a lot of other teams full up with nobody to move to IL-60. Claim or PTBNL type trade (AZL/DSL non prospect in exchange for the older upper level guy for less time)

Quote from fenn68 on April 1, 2021, 3:12 pmA bad team with a bad 40 man should have little problem doing a DFA of their low hanging fruit if the claim is for a better player.
Think the key is the Padres seeing longer term value and the player is projected better than their current crop on non-roster options they could add. Rivas - Tanielu - Castillo - Katoh - Andreoli - Rivas most (if not all) probably are about the same as any DFA claim ... plus probably going to be a few veterans who clear waivers they can sign to minor league contracts. Sort of the same logic with pitchers getting DFA ... given the MLB shortage of pitchers useful in 2021 ... hard to see any team giving up quality.

Quote from LynchMob on April 2, 2021, 6:50 pmBOGUS! I just watched Mookie Betts start to swing ... gets hit by the pitch on his arm ... and they awarded him first base! If he had not started to swing, he would not have been hit ... I guess I've never seen anything like that ...
Here's something I just found at mlb.com ...
So ... no way that Mookie attempted to avoid being hit by the pitch!

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 2, 2021, 8:20 pmThe Rox just did to the Dodgers what the D Backs did to us last night.
Four home runs in one inning.
Making a game of it after being no hit for the first six innings.
