Around the League...non Padres

PreviousPage 87 of 225Next

Not this interview but a few weeks earlier did hear some league commentary that it may be 5 years before the league is ready to expand (no comment on specific cities).

Now since it takes time to get ownership groups vetted and approved ... those organizations get up and running (e.g. everything from business side staffing, scouting, minor league framework, players) ... all before a team shows up on the ML field. So, IF MLB is willing to expand it will be after the CBA is settled ... so maybe in 2023 the league STARTS the process and, at best, 2025-26 we actually see a team.

Five years was probably too long a wait for Dombrowski for a maybe.

Lindor and Carrasco to the Mets for Gimenez and Rosario and a couple minor pieces

I assume the Mets will extend Lindor.

At least try ... but with the full crop of FA SS coming on for 2022 might not force the issue.

Lindor / Carrasco ... plus what ever else the add this winter (? Springer) is primarily a push to win in 2021 (watch out ATL in the NL East).

Really makes no difference in the trade if they re-sign Lindor for big future money or sign one of the other FA SS next winter to big money.

Cleveland cleared a lot more money ... they achieved their primary objective regardless of the future of those prospects.

I believe that Cleveland has now achieved the lowest payroll projection in MLB at about $40MM ... dipping under DET at about $47MM.

A few other teams are in the $50-60MM range and still more remain under $100MM. Not going to be a great set-up for the new CBA negotiations no matter how much owners plead poverty due to the pandemic.

In order to remain competitive, it has long been suggested that there should be a floor payroll amount for MLB teams.  There already is (sort of) a ceiling payroll amount over which you are penalized, but the opposite should apply to these low end teams who should either put a competitive team on the field, move to a better market or sell the team to investors who are willing to meet the league payroll minimums.

If the league wants baseball to thrive then you must have interest up and down the league in both big market and small market cities.  Currently what do the fans in Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh and other struggling teams have to look forward to?  It's a vicious circle and downward spiral to the game many of us love above all others.

Bet it comes up in the CBA negotiations .... probably linked with whole luxury tax issue.

Owners: no floor ... hard(er) cap

Union: floor ... no cap

However, IF a comprise is negotiated ... not sure who wants what more .... pretty sure the BIG owners and the SMALL owners would be on different pages before the debate with the union who seem to have preferred the "no cap" first since there was a belief that if the top players got big bucks that would just pull the rest along.

Also, probably a lot of debate ... if a floor was on the table ... what the right level should be. Probably on some sort of multi-year rolling average but a lot of consideration has to be given to the lower revenue teams ... doubt either the owners / union want any team to implode and get into the political issues around moving multiple franchises to locations that may (or may not) be better locales.

Like a game of dominoes ... if a high floor ... does that cause the owners to move to a more rich revenue sharing among the teams? BIG revenue teams have not been willing to lower revenues to help the lower revenue teams.

Not sure what moves either side in 2022.

I've always felt that if every team benefits from revenue sharing there needs to be a minimum for payroll.

Some of these owners are just content to take take take...from revenue sharing, tickets,TV etc. and the last thing on their minds is competing.

If I was a Pirates fan(was as a kid) I would start a grass roots effort to get their fans to just not go to games.

If they keep getting 15-20,000 at every game despite no chance to win the owners will just keep doing it.

Force the owner to spend or sell.

The Padres have now shown everyone else you don't have to be in NY,Chi or LA to field a competitive team.

I bet there are a few owners out there who are not too pleased with Seidler/Fowler right now.

Side note on the Lindor / Carrasco deal to the Mets. Apparently taking on the 2021 cost of Lindor and Carrasco was made “easier” due to the suspension of Cano (Mets don’t need to pay his big contract in 2021).

Mets have indicated that they do not want to go over the luxury tax level and remain about $20MM under for additional signings. Also, apparently want to hold back some room for mid-season adds if needed.

If that is true .... probably out of the Bauer, Springer pursuit with maybe $10-15MM available.
