Around the League...non Padres

I hadn't noticed what Devin Williams of the Brewers is doing ...

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/willide03.shtml

Only 6 hits and 1 run in 25 IPs with 52 Ks!  Oh, my!

That's a 1268 ERA+!

That's a Maddux/Hoffman changeup!

Me either... Jayson Stark of The Athletic just wrote him up as his choice for NL ROY.  Tough to argue the #'s which are utterly insane.  Not sure I've ever seen pitches move the way his do ultra late.    He had Jake #2, Bohm #3.

Josh Naylor became the first player in MLB history to record a hit in each of his first five postseason plate appearances

Margot HR (!) in game 1 followed by Renfroe Slam in game 2 for the Rays who advance...

Margot has had a decent year and we've been waiting for that kind of season for years in San Diego.  I'm happy for him.  Renfroe has been Renfroe - a few big moments but mostly nothing.  Hope Tampa does well, as they have this year, against the Yankees.

Question for the stat heads here: Alex Kirilloff, Twins rookie, gets his first MLB AB and hit in the post season.

Let's say for obscurity sake, ( god forbid) the young man gets hurt and never appears in another major league game.

Since post season stats are seperate from regular season stats, does this mean Alex NEVER got a hit, or AB at the major league level? Hopefully the kid goes on to a long, successful career. I'm just wondering what if?

This is worth reading ...

Bob Gibson. Now that’s a man. And so much more.

The report card at The Athletic on a player the Red Sox hope will be part of their rebuilding:

3B Hudson Potts

Acquired from San Diego, 2016 first-round pick | Age: 21

Area of progress: All-fields approach at the plate

Needs improvement: Potential for more power

McMillon: “I was really impressed with his approach at the plate. He would hit a ball to the pull side, 400 feet and then hit a line drive to right-center field. Big, strong kid. He showed a little defensive versatility too. We played him some at second base. But the lion’s share of his work was at third base. If you look at him physically, body type reminds you of a Will Middlebrooks. That’s the first person I thought about when I saw him. Good kid, very hard worker. I like him, he’s going to be an interesting person when we try to slot him somewhere with a full year of Double-A under his belt.”

Look for the Angels, with a new GM, to be active post season to try to get the most out of the Trout years - again.  They do have excess quality OF's, so those of you who are calling for Marsh or Adell, may see either traded although not to the Padres.  Angels have to be looking for proven controllable arms, not necessarily that young, to get them to be competitive with the A's and Astros in 2021.

If the new GM is Dombrowski as speculated, then he has the reputation of dealing for quick results by using prospects .... they do need pitching. Probably more than just one add ... and probably some level of “proven” ML success. Just not sure how much money is in the LAA till given some high contracts that remain on the books.

IF the money is there .... expect them to go hard for the FA.  If not, guessing they don’t move Adell (to high ceiling and they will need a RF at some point in 2021) but maybe Marsh but only for an impactful return for 2021. Not sure who would deal that level of talent for just Marsh ... or who really has that level of talent to deal.

Don’t see the Padres in the mix for Marsh this winter ...

However, could see Preller being in the game with maybe a Lucchesi / Baez type for LAA depth and use his strategy of mining LAA recent international signings / draft picks if he likes them (players that Dombrowski has no allegiance with so maybe under valued). Outside chance they target Adams (young CF in high A) ... not a Top 100 but think #3 in the LAA system with that scary “high upside”.

First Lou Brock, then Bob Gibson and Whitey Ford, now Joe Morgan.
