Around the League...non Padres

In a bit of irony today, Colin Rea gets the win over Cincinnati and Luis Castillo.

That one will always sting , we should have Castillo. Not complaining but Paddack got hurt after 3 games and 14 innings. Miami should not have complained when Rea made 1 start for them, we kind of got screwed a bit.

Agreed.

Injuries can happen anytime.

Castillo would be GREAT in our rotation.

Seattle just picked up yet another ex-Padres pitcher, Walker Lockett.   If only we could have convinced them to take Stammen in our two trades with them - even pick up majority of his salary?

Local boy does well!

Glad to see Alex getting a shot and STAYING healthy.

Hard as it is to believe .... SF is now the 8th seed in the NL. Strange season .. SF hot early .. cold middle ... hot now ... all with very very little talent.

=====

On the flip side ... COLO started out very hot ... went very cold. In their case probably leads to the end of Bud Black's managerial run in COLO.

Arenado can opt out after 2021 and he was unhappy with COLO after resigning with a "promise" that ownership will add to contend then said they were cash strapped. Story is a FA after 2021. Blackman has a player option after 2021 (although at then 36 he will not opt out of a $21MM deal for 2022). Looks as though 2021 will be a critical season for COLO to survive beyond.

Wheat might be separating from chaff in NL... or it could just be daily standings changes in short season.

St. Louis, Miami, Philly, San Fran sitting in the 5-8 playoff spots all have 2-3 game win streaks.  1st three 1 game >.500, SF 1 game <.500.

Meanwhile: Colorado (#9 @ 2 games < .500), Milwaukee 2.5 games <.500, Cincy & NY Mets really fading both 6 games <.500

All but Milwaukee have 3-5 game losing streaks.

Still think .500 gets the # 8 seed in the NL.  That would be 8-15 rest of way for us 🙂   Maybe 10-13 just to be safe.

On another bb that I frequent, I commented on Franmil's recent 5-hit game ... and got this reply ...

Course I never expected 8 hits in a row. Couple of those were blooped Wee Wllie Keeler style.

Reyes has a good eye and is learning how to use the field when faced with soft stuff. He used an inside out swing for a bloop to right Wednesday night. He's been working, you can tell. I can see a .260-.270  hitter with 30-40 HR during the next few years.

Looks like we swapped Franmil for Nola?

Think I'd rather have Reyes as our DH for the next decade.

Still, Nola is a MAJOR upgrade offensively from Hedges and will bridge the gap from now until Campusano.

Liking our chances.

Listened to a very good interview with catcher Jacob Stallings.

Part of the interview had to do with strike zones and the “K-zone” square on TV. A couple of points ... he indicated that he after games often cross checks the K-zone “call” vs an internal tool (more accurate) and K-zone can be inaccurate. Interesting he goes through that analysis and has to internal tools.

Second, the discussion was umpire making accurate calls ... he basically said the high strike is maybe the toughest to call and, even while he is catching, it is the hardest to judge for him.

I see the “robo umpire” coming sooner than later to call balls and strikes. If you have seen ESPN’s tool (only use it sometimes) which gives a full three dimensional view of the strike zone and the path of the ball ... and if you like accurate calls ... have to hope that is implemented. Similar technology to what they use in tennis and European football.

Post trading deadline, looks like Lynn is taking it on the chin today versus the Astros.  Texas holding on to him not looking like the right move.  Hope Clevinger fares a lot better.
