Around the League...non Padres

Still alot.

No one else has done it and 10 homeruns by May 23rd is alot against "all" teams.

10 homeruns in "eight" games against one team is pretty rare I would think.

As of right now 60 players have 10 or more home runs!

60!

That means 60 players  are on pace for 30+ on the season.

While only 5 have 10 or more steals.

Netting or no netting?

Did you guys see what happened in Houston last night? Cubs Albert Almora Jr.  hit a foul ball into the stands and hit a little girl. She was taken to hospital and appears stable. Almora less so. It clearly affected him a great deal, even brought him to tears.

Players are calling for it, writers are calling for it( read Passan's article). MLB needs to protect its fans. The NHL did it and the game has survived. I think the game of baseball would too.

Netting. Absolutely, unequivocally, hands down there needs to be more netting. The Padres have lead the way with their aggressive netting, and after sitting down both the 1st and 3rd base lines I can honestly say it's not a big deal in terms of game experience. What little difference it makes is VASTLY outweighed by the improvement to fan safety. Say what you will about fan vigilance, there is no way every fan can stay aware 100% of the time. Even if they were, there is still significant risk for injury.

I simply cannot fathom why teams aren't universally meeting or exceeding the standards set by Petco in this regard.

This has happend before at Petco, I have seen a couple of kids being hit by foul balls, they just take it seriously because is a Cubs game and has national attention, if more netting is needed just depends on how much attention fans want to put into the actual game

Not sure why baseball has not just mandated all parks expand the netting to a high standard / protection of the fans. IF the want to gain traction with kids and maintain the casual fans to keep attendance up ... they have to do everything to protect them. At a time when they are glamorizing the increase in "exit velocity" they should be able to connect the dots that the reaction times of most fans even when they are paying attention is no match and in the era of cell phones reality is that giving full focus to each pitch is not reality.

Heard a discussion that there are some studies on the current ML baseballs and the ML bats to see if they are factors in the continuing growth in HRs.

MLB set an all-time record for May HR plus we are now at an all time record of the % of runs scored via HR ... nearing 50%.

The baseballs have been debatable for some time but interesting on the bats. Apparently some changes in quality control and the lacquering techniques ... designed to reduce the broken bats resulting in barrels flying around .... may have created a harder bat that generates more velocity / distance. I hadn't thought about it but, yes, seems as though the broken bat plague of a few years ago has been cured. As always, be wary of unintended consequences.
