Around the League...non Padres

PreviousPage 32 of 224Next

Angels can't seem to stay healthy .... now Justin Upton is out for 8 - 12 weeks .... Otani  remains out for now ... SP has lost a couple of their expected starters.

They really don't have much bench / minor league help to replace Upton .... it is early in the season and the Angels do not likely want to be out of contention by Jun 1 .... trade for an interim corner OF? Renfroe for a prospect from the lower levels (a Preller specialty)? Angels don't have much in their system and probably will not deal from their limited top tier prospects.

The Orioles manager just took his starter out after 81 pitches with a 6-0 lead and 6 1/3 innings into a No Hitter.

I’m sure he told him it was for his own health and good.....but something tells me David Hess May never have another chance at a major league no hitter.

Heck I just tuned in to watch it and only got to see 1 out and he was yanked.

Jim Palmer has to be shaking his head.

RP comes in and a walk then a 2 run HR .... whew.

Just a guess ... as much as 81 pitchers .... but bet the stats guys just did not want him to face the 3rd time though the line-up (at last starting with #3 Smoak).

Reds pitching prospect Hunter Greene will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Yes, only 5 games for Cleveland but their start is supporting the fear they will be offensively challenged ... especially in the OF.

30th in team OPS at an ugly .468 (slash line 160/237/231

only veteran 1B/DH hitting: Santana (1.056) and Hanley Ramirez (.904) with no one else over .513.

The OF:

Martin (CF) ... .513

Bauers (LF) ... .481

Naquin (RF) ... .333

Allen (CF) ... .182

Luplow (RF) ... .393

Not sure they would represent a good AAA OF. Looking like a big window opening up for MINN since the Indians' owner does not seem all that interested in making a deal to even improve the OF.

Add that in 2 starts (10.1 innings) Kluber has a 5.23 ERA/1.55 WHIP .... 0-2

Not sure when the owner shifts gears but at the core he wants to reduce payroll and little near term offense in the their minors ... and that OF has little chance of being good this year or next year or anytime in the future. Clearly Bauer (controlled for 2020) and Kluber (controlled through 2021) and both making decent money yet not that much for a more financially healthy team have to be moved.

Might be a big trade deadline season for the Tribe (once they are clearly out of it for 2019 ... likely their last shot). Add that at some point they have to be dangling Lindor out there ... gigantic return potential ... and he has made it clear he will go to FA (Tribe can't afford to re-sign him).

Could get ugly sooner than later.

They’re missing their window.

That Division is bad...and they have 2 Ace starters and 2 of the best 5 tool players in baseball.

Yet nothing else.

In a year or two their window will be closed.

Well another hit to Cleveland .... RHSP Clevenger will be out for at least 3 months. His was VERY good. Still no OF. Lindor out for the month (at least). Kipnis out. Owner will not add anything to the payroll ... so no significant support coming. This could get ugly sooner than later.

All that offset by being in the AL Central which really has no strong teams ... so winning the AL Central still could be in the sightline. Quite a dilemma.

July might be a significant decision point in the dealing of a lot of talent for the future ... but not likely before then.

They also have to decide if winning the division is enough.

I don't see them getting beyond the first round of the playoffs no matter who they play.

So do they risk their long term future(as it is) just because the division is weak and they may be able to coast into the playoffs or do they make some moves that would improve their outlook in 2020 and beyond?

I realize making the playoffs is what matters and if you get in you "might" be able to go all the way....and in Clevelands case with tat pitching maybe that "is" enough?

It is quite the dilemma.....it may boil down to what the next month shows for them.

Do they get/stay healthy and keep winning enough to win the division or do more injuries hit and they fall back in the standings to the Twins or Sox?

Does anyone believe the Tigers will keep winning?

Man, looked at Indians & just can't believe how "weird" their team composition is.  If they weren't in such a weak division, they'd look ready for a Mariners style "transform/youth movement", but they're almost compelled to stand pat (more so now) & try to survive to the deadline to buy OF help.

Worth watching for rest of April & May, but even if things fall completely apart it seems from their POV like it'd make more sense to stand pat & wait till deadline to Sell.

Unfortunately for us this is true.

If we want Bauer or Kluber our only hope is that the Twins and/or the Tigers run away with the Division over the next 30-40 games.
