Around the League...non Padres

Luis Urias’ big brother, Ramon, in his first taste of stateside baseball, is now slashing .319/.367/.569 in Double-A during his age 23/24 season.

We are seeing a recent burst of "I got you" disclosures on MLB players for their racist / homophobic tweets made 6-7 years ago (give or take) when basically HS age. In the past couple of weeks:

Sonny Grey (NYY)

Josh Hader (Milw)

Trea Turner (Wash)

Sean Newcombe (Atl)

This is certainly is a polarizing situation. Easy to brush it off (as a fan) as missteps by an 18 year old and they have grown up and matured (but have they?) ... no way to tell.

On the flip side ... who are these folks who have the desire to deep dive into players twitter history (or other media history) and for what real purpose? Just to dent the image of a successful individual or to really expose a untenable character flaw?

I guess there is software that makes this "easy" with key word / phrase searches .... sort of a sad societal commentary all around.

I think to hold 17 year olds to what they wrote ten years ago is stupid. I don't think you really know who you are until you're 25. At least I didn't. PC, uh!

I wanted to let you all know that I just realized Tyler Chatwood's BB/9 is 8.2!! And I thought Bryan Mitchell couldn't locate...

But how are his "advanced metrics"?

🙂

Bad, as you would think. ERA+ of 87, FIP around 5.5. His k/9 is actually up and his h/9 and home run rate are down, but his walk rate nearly doubled from last season. That's what's fueling his terrible season.

Nah, I'd definitely hold 17-19 year olds accountable for stuff they wrote that they believed enough to put their name and face on it. That's the difference between the edgy teenager on 4chan and the racist on twitter.

Reds pitching prospect Hunter Greene has been diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Uh oh. The No. 2 overall pick is done for the season, although he'll attempt to rest and rehab the injury for now. The risk, of course, is that Greene might eventually need Tommy John surgery. The soon-to-be 19-year-old has posted a 4.48 ERA and 89/23 K/BB ratio over 68 1/3 innings at the Low-A level this season.

So we have a 20 year old pitcher in A Ball who’s 8-4 with a 1.74 ERA and a 4/1 K-BB ratio and hasn’t given up an earned run in his last 22 innings and  isn’t even in our top 30 prospects.

Oh...and tonight he’s throwing a no hitter thru 6.

Should we be talking about Osvaldo Hernandez?

And I’ll take the blame for that first hit!

ugh!

Phillies recalled RHP Enyel De Los Santos from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

De Los Santos will operate in a relief role this time around with the Phillies after making one good start and one bad start last month in his first taste of major league action. The 23-year-old right-hander has posted a 2.51 ERA and 97/36 K/BB ratio in 104 innings (18 starts) this season at Triple-A.
