Around the League...non Padres

PreviousPage 25 of 224Next

Cory Spangenberg homered Monday in the Brewers' Cactus League loss to the Angels.

COL extends Arenado for 8/$260 mil.  The Machado deal looks even better with this and Harper seeming to be closing in on a $300+ contract.

While I'm sure it's speculation... the timing on the Arenado extension is huge for us!  Had Arenado extended prior to us locking down Machado it could have definitely intensified the Yankees attempt in getting our guy.

I agree, I know many where thinking that SD would be a player for Arenado next year just goes to show how quick things can change. I would also think that between the contract for Machado and this extension for Arenado, that should pretty much set the market for a Rendon extension as well. I dont think we will Rendon on the market next winter now either. Probably a good deal that SD signed Machado.

Im calling my shot, Harper signs a 10/350 deal from whomever he signs. Largest value for the term (Stanton - 325), highest AAV (Grienke - 34.4/year), and will need at least one year prior to the opt out to be at $46M for one year (Strasburg - 2023 @ $45M).

Today's report has Harper meeting again with SF. Suggestion is that may be in part to LAD's new interest. Wonder is how much of LAD "interest" is to get SF to go big on Harper and tap out a lot of their monies? No matter Boras has to be a happy negotiator when that is combined with the report that PHIL is in the "over $300MM/10 year plateau" plus (as always) there in another team also in with a greater than $300MM offer. Love the mystery team.

I have been sitting on WASH but some suggest CWS might come back into the picture. Wild Card ... Arizona ... basically lost Corbin, Pollack, Goldschmidt and are trying to go for a new ballpark ... Harper may be the PR move worth the big money (remember they came in late on Greinke when everyone thought LAD where a lock to get him. Is Phoenix closer to LV than SD?

Both are about the same distance, a 4-5 hour drive and an hour flight. I would be surprised by AZ jumping in since their farm is not good, a couple of better players being close to FA, and are a hodge podge fan base similar to SD. Whereas many of the fans in the seats are there for the visiting team, since a lot of the population of the Valley are from another place such as Chicago, So Cal, and NY. Plus, I would imagine they would have to defer a lot of the monies, much like WAS was offering. I really think this is going to boil down to LAD and SF.

Although it would be crazy how many baseballs Harper would splash into the pool in RC field.

Harper to sign with Phillies.

13/$330 mil.

No opt outs apparently

Thats  about $25.4 per season.

Some interesting comments attributed to Boras ... and how Harper's wishes may not have been fully understood.

Apparently Harper wanted to sign a deal that kept him with team for the rest of his career ... hence the 13 year deal with full no trade .. probably giving up the opt out clause to get that ... fits. Also, he apparently wanted to play in the PHIL's ballpark ... a hitters' paradise where he can put up great stats (which may turn into big endorsement money). He just did not want to go through this FA saga again.

I guess could add with the PHIL's other moves this offseason ... an immediate contender (if not favorite) in NL East ... maybe NL.

side note: one report suggests his deal is "front loaded / no deferrals" which will make it economically more valuable to Harper. Additionally the "lower AAV" by going out 13 years (later years being apparently lower annually) keeps the AAV for luxury tax down saving the PHILs some money and / or giving them room for more adds.

Seems as though both sides juggled the elements to get what they wanted.

I still like the Braves in the East.

Phils still need a Starter and a Closer.

Now if they add Kuechel or Kimbrel I could see giving them the edge.

I like Kimbrel and Kuechel for either the Phils or the Braves actually.

This Harper signing could motivate the Braves to make another move for one or the other.

Advantage whichever does.
