Around the League...non Padres

Quote from David Nevin on February 16, 2019, 10:01 am

I wasn’t suggesting the Padres sign him.

Just that he signed and another day has passed without us doing anything.

I feel you David. This is exceptionally frustrating.  Now AJ is saying no SP additions either.  Is betrayal what I am feeling?

All this Realmuto,Harper,Machado talk isn’t helping matters.

Never in a million years expected us to get any of them....but now all the buildup will still make it a disappointment if we don’t.

I just don’t understand all the interest in expensive “star” players and then............nothing.

Not even a Starter or a third baseman.

It can’t just be about not wanting to trade our top prospects because they didn’t sign free agents either.

So we had interest in a dozen trade scenarios and multiple free agents.....yet couldn’t pull the trigger on anything but Kinsler.

Something just sounds “off”.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced today that he will retire at the end of the 2019 season (Twitter link). Baseball’s longest-tenured skipper, Bochy is entering his 13th season as the Giants’ manager. In that time, he’s overseen three World Series championships (2010, 2012 and 2014) and helped guide the Giants to a 979-965 record.

Good guy ... good manager ... SD memories.

======

Given the track record (Bochy, Black, Roberts) of managers in the NL West .... is this an omen for the firing of Green after the season and SF hiring him to lead them to the playoffs after 2019?

Saw an interview with Marcus Stroman on High Heat (MLB Network) ... this guy is full of himself and just out of touch reality.

He basically ranted about Toronto not engaging in long term extension talk and praise himself for being the only player who wants to play in Toronto. After his rant, Russo put up his stats ... which clearly don't support signing him long term (or even keeping him).  2018 injured / very poor performance ... maybe he should focus on being healthy and performance in 2019 before he whines about not getting a long term deal. Blue Jays are not going to commit to him for his 2015 and 2017 past.

Sounds like a guy to stay away from.

Happy to post this under "non Padres" 🙂

Sonny Gray was scratched from his scheduled Cactus League start Saturday due to right elbow stiffness.

Kershaw has been shut down indefinitely also.

Once again a caution against putting long-term big money on pitchers ... better risk with position players.

Looking more and more like the comparisons of Kershaw with Koufax may be more accurate than ever.

Kershaw is one (full) season away from matching Koufax's innings pitched.

Well we are getting to near the end of the bigger name FA still out there. Besides Harper ... Kimbrel (who seems to be still holding for a very long term big money deal) ... Kuechel (Boras client so ? but was also long term big money). Going to be interesting with them.

Marwin Gonzalez signs for well below expectations ($21mm/2years) and Iglesias signs a minor league deal that if he makes the club something in the $2MM range. IF that is the reality these days ... Kimbrel and Kuechel are going to be this year's Moustakas for last year ... shocking low contract.

Appears players / agents / media are still locked into the past and are rejecting the reality of current FO player evaluation considering more heavily what was done last year, impact of aging, and alternative that can deliver similar projection at a fraction of the ask.

Listen to MLB's Hot Stove this a.m. and they were extolling the virtues of Adam Jones and how he could not yet be signed. Most of their dialogue was his great career but avoid the fact that he made about $17MM last season ... is no longer a good CF and delivered a mid-.700 OPS. Renfroe did that for league minimum and has upside at 27. Probably the same view from other clubs. They added that given his age and track record he wants to sign for a contender and play full time (plus get a good payday) ... that is really is out of touch with his current skill set.

Sure seems that everyone is living in the past in the world of player valuations.
