Around the League...non Padres

PreviousPage 23 of 224Next

With ST opening this week, the rumored NYY entry into the Machado sweepstakes and the SF entry into the Harper sweepstakes might just get things moving.

NYY / Machado may be the key. Machado has made it clear he wants to play on the East Coast and with the NYY ... if the money is right. NYY enter late with a competitive offer (and clearly has financial flexibility) with the CWS appearing to be the active competition (appears PHIL is still just in neutral). If NYY win the bid that leaves PHIL to focus on Harper. Not sure how interested CWS are in Harper.

That would set up well for Boras with PHIL and its "crazy money", WASH and Boras' close relationship with the owner, CWS with money to deploy, and now SF who appears to be going short term but high AAV. Four clubs with big money ... Harper should do well although still probably will not sign quickly.

Yes, money first but I wonder where Harper would like to land? Guessing a return to WASH ... apparently a good relationship with ownership and a team poised to win now and in the near term. PHIL, as a place to play, may be good for his stats but not sure about his fit with the city/fans/media. SF's rumored short term / high AAV may not be his objective (rather long term security) plus a very old team that can fade to oblivion in 2019 (with a poor farm system). CWS would be a bet on their future with a plus farm system but in a market that has the CWS playing second fiddle to the Cubs. Interesting choices if the offers are comparable.

Surely if Machado ends up a Yankee they will have to trade at least one of their infielders.

They do  have some other options.

Remember Gregorious will be out for at least 1/2 a season (if not more) and is a FA after the season ... so he is not a factor.

Tulowitzki is only a $500K commitment and could be easily given his release which he would want if Machado comes in to play SS full time. (might even be an understanding with Tulo when signed).

IF Machado is given the SS slot (very likely) then Andujar can remain at a 3B for now and Torres holds 2B and a mix and match for 1B with LeMahieu, Voit (who should regress), and Bird (prospect that never developed).

I guess the other option is Machado to 3B shifting Andjuar to 1B .... Torres to SS ... and just insert LeMahieu at 2B. Wade is on the bench.

=====

One potential move ... having to do with salary cap ... is the release of Gregorious now and save most of this $11MM salary ... he will be a FA after the season and not sure where he would fit in. So maybe signing of Machado results in the release of both Gregorious and Tulowitzki.

The current market for Marwin Gonzalez is just another reflection of the divergent views of a player ... fans / media vs. the analytics cast against of expected contract.

Fans / media seem to love Gonzalez focusing on his versatility and getting a bit biased by his 2017 season. I am sure Gonzalez and his agent (Boras) are are using that as an argument to justify a Zobrist type contract ($56MM/4 years) ... MLBTradeRumors estimated $36MM/4 years.

Listen to an "analytical view" of the soon to be 30 year old ... not as appealing. First, offensively (even with the excellent 2017) has him as an average player around a 100 wRC+. Defensively, he is a plus LF .. about average 1B/2B ... and well below average SS. (note not played much 3B/CF/RF). Put his offense in LF  or 1B and that is nothing special for those positions ... he be OK maybe at 2B ... and probably a liability at SS.

So his "value" is as that super-sub role ... probably on a team with stability at the starting positions (likely a contender) ... but what from a contract perspective is that worth? Whatever he is demanding ... clearly not what the teams think. First, the 4 year deal in this environment for a 30 year old is unlikely (more like 2 with and outside chance on 3). AAV maybe more likely under $10MM than the $14MM for Zobrist.

Teams may want to spend (if they spend) on starters or spend a lot less on the alternatives for bench roles.

For 14mil per he would have to play everyday or at minimum be on a contender who needs the flexibility he provides.

I don't think he's good enough to play everyday and to pay $14 mil per season.

Yangervis Solarte signs with Giants.

Padres again do nothing.

Versatility is so overhyped due to the Cubs/Astros run where Zobrist and Gonzalez had huge years. When really they just had huge years and versatility was fairly meaningless. Classic "bats play" that's being flipped into something it's not.

He really helps the team in no way. He is no Manny or Moose, and France or Vosler have a chance to be as good. So save the roster spot and the $2M on a real improvement.

I wasn’t suggesting the Padres sign him.

Just that he signed and another day has passed without us doing anything.

Should have known, you have a good eye towards the future and Solarte would be a step back.
