08.06... Bergert
(1-1) took the loss Tuesday, giving up two runs on two hits and two
walks over 5.2 innings as the Royals were downed 6-2 by the Red Sox.
Spin:
Making his first appearance for Kansas City after being acquired as
part of the Freddy Fermin trade, Bergert battled Boston ace Garrett
Crochet to a 1-1 tie through five frames before the home squad finally
pulled ahead for good in the sixth. Bergert tossed 61 of 85 pitches for
strikes, falling just short of his first career quality start, and the
25-year-old rookie staked a claim to potentially handle at least one
more turn through the rotation while Michael Lorenzen (oblique)
completes a rehab assignment. If Bergert does get another start with the
Royals, it would likely come at home early next week against the
Nationals.

Old friend alert:
Former Padre catcher Austin Nola gives up eight earned runs in his one inning of work for the Rockies today against the Blue Jays

Shame we didn't flip Sears to KC instead of Bergert🙄

Young, controllable SP who will eat innings and make a start every 5th day is pretty valuable.

So what you're saying is he's probably not going to be as good as Andres Munoz?😂😂😂

Bryan Woo has made 22 starts for the Seattle Mariners this year. He has gone a minimum of six innings in every……. single…… one.

Don’t judge either trade just yet. Bergert was our 21st rated prospect for a reason. I hope he continues to pitch well for KC, but I don’t think there’s any chance he becomes a top of the rotation starter or anything. Plus, Niebla hasn’t had a chance to work with Sears at all. Let’s give them one off-season together at least.

Keep in mind the Padres traded Kolek and Bergert to get Fermin ... likely their starting catcher for the next four years at a time with no slam dunk options in the system and understanding getting a good catcher ... for four years ... at a low cost is a costly proposition.

Not fair to compare Sears to Bergert (or Kolek) ... two different trades with two different objectives. See Sears as a throw-in (in an effort to add some depth) with the primary objective to get Miller for 4 years / low cost for an elite arm. Hopefully Niebla can work with Sears and get him to a serviceable #5 SP ... has some talent to work with and does stay healthy and pitch every start and does eat innings. #5 baring some kind of breakthrough with command.

With Fermin in the fold, no way Padres going to exercise their part of the mutual option for Diaz at 7M, buying him out a 2M.  This again opens the door for Campusano, who will be out of options and can back up Fermin and possibly share the 1b/DH role with Sheets, depending upon what happens with Arraez.  If not Campusano, then within the system Duran has had a great year at EP and Vilar could be a dark horse back-up.  Long-term, still looking at Salas and now draftees Harvey and Madonna along with guys like Carlos Rodriguez and Yoiber Ocopio.  Don't think Lamar King's position will be at catcher but still he and Durfee can be considered long-shots.  I'm hoping in the next year, what seems to be a weakness in our catching position becomes a strength.

At this point Campusano is really the only candidate for #2 catcher in 2026 ... plus he fits the limits apparently on the Padres ... near league minimum and multi-year control remaining. I don't see any of the AAA/AA catchers bumping him ... just not good enough.

What I do expect is that Preller will find the next Maldonado-like FA ... veteran with good defense at near the $1MM price tag. A one year fill and kick the can down the road.

Alternatively, but high probability, Preller pulls off a "minor deal" to get a #2 catcher (no illusion of a #1 type) who fits the league minimum / multi-year control / good defense mold. Guessing Preller will try to use assets such as Waldron, Reynolds, or Marinaccio who are all out of options in 2026 to get a surplus catcher from some team. Teams need pitching depth so those Padre names might appeal. Escarra (NYY)? Lee (CWS)? sure there are others who fit the #2 catcher mold.

Also, would not rule out Preller ... given what appears to remain a payroll issue in 2026 ... may try to get #2 catcher by dangling Matsui or Peralta (probably with a mid range prospect) and simultaneously save $4MMish to deploy on a more pressing need. Note that apparently to get BALT to eat most of the remaining 2025 salary on Laureano and O'Hearn Preller had to add those "extra" prospects in the deal. So the payroll has to be a consideration.

Campusano may stay around ... going into the winter the bench / DH roles are really thin ... so even if Preller comes up with a #2 catcher, Campy could still have a role (at least through ST).

In case you haven’t seen Jurickson’s catch.
