Makes them similar to Cleveland, teams with barely ML caliber OF and no desire to spend on the FA. Guess they both will just wait out the FA market and pick up one (or more) of the FA dirt cheap (not Harper) ... someone like Adam Jones on a 1 year deal. There are 5 - 10 "useful" veteran OF looking for a job.

IF PHIL does not sign Harper ... they may jump into the OF FA market (with more money to spend).

I guess they all are a potential team for a SD OF if the Padres are willing to accept prospects ... all have visions of contending so moving a good ML player is not likely. Since PHIL is the only team that seems willing to spend ... maybe he becomes a spot for Myers (who would carry some name recognition to satisfy the PHIL fans).

PHIL would have to sign Machado (or Moustakas) first, then a Myers / Franco deal may be in play.

Hard to read Preller on his view of the value of Myers or Franco. I don't think shading Myers' contract is a primary goal ... Preller would want talent back. Preller may be "interested" in Franco ... but he is "interested" in everyone and Franco had a so-so season, has only 3 control years, and will be due some legit money.... so may take him but not for Myers unless PHIL added a key prospect.

So, maybe but not a one for one in my mind.

For me, Harper's bonus value is that he is one of the most marketable player is in MLB which will propel the Padres in the national spotlight and should be their best "face of the franchise" (until Tatis delivers).

Also, consider Boras is Moustakas' agent. Creative thinking:

Padres sign BOTH Harper and Moustakas working with Boras to work two creative cash flows fitting them both into the payroll structure. Boras has been creative in cash flows with players before. Boras wins getting both signed at acceptable money in a structure that he seems to believe in and secondarily benefits his other clients who would benefit from a winning organization. Padres win with adding two high profile talents for RF and 3B ... improves the on the field team ... improves the team image.

Padres then they are free to move the current "excess" and not necessarily try to get the maximum return and focus more on the best targeted return.

Also worth considering is that Harper's close friend, Kris Bryant, played at USD and loved his time here as well. Sometimes it's the little things that help the most, right?
