Around the League...non Padres

Bochy ring number 4....

Cool to see how a GM and Manager working together, in a short period of time, can bring a group of guys together and produce this outcome.

Just have to have the right guys. Afraid to say, until Seidler moves on from AJ, it won't happen here.

Rangers had the biggest gain in wins over their 2022 season, +22, in all of the major leagues.  They were followed in double digit gains by the Reds (+20), Orioles (+18), Nationals (+16),  Marlins (+15), Pirates (+14), Rays (+13), Tigers (+12) and finally Diamondbacks (+10).

On the other end of the spectrum were the Mets (-26), White Sox (-20), Cardinals (-18), Yankees (-17), Astros and Guardians (-16), Dodgers (-11) and Athletics (-10).

Where were the Padres?  They were lost 7 games more in 2023 than they did in 2022.  The big difference was that in 2022 they were +9 on the road, while in 2023, they were -5.  If they had just finished at .500 on the road, their record would have been 87-75, good for the last playoff spot in the NL in 2023, despite all the injuries and underperformance of many key players in so many close games.

That and extra inning/one run games.

Anyone have the difference in these from '22 to '23?

In what many would think as a risky decision ... Sean Manaea opted out of his deal with SF and a contract worth $12.5MM. That seems like a strong payday given his 2023 and age.

Maybe he is worried about future contracts and thinks he can land a longer term deal guaranteeing 2-3 years even if at a lower AAV (but greater total)?

Maybe he has history with Melvin ... and not in a good way?

Maybe I am under estimating this winter's cost of FA pitching?

What about Wade Miley opting out of a 10M contract with the Brewers at age 37?  Wainwright retired at 42 years of age, but you still have other FA guys in the 36-40+ age range who apparently aren't ready to hang them up - Hill, Greinke, Morton, Kershaw, Cueto, Kluber, Carrasco, Maeda, Ryu, Lynn and others who are still looking to continue their careers.  With the exception of Kershaw, who will always be a Dodger, do any of these oldies have anything left to be a low cost risk 5th starter with the Padres?  Maybe Ryu or Maeda? Lynn?

My guess if anyone thinks they have any juice left ... they are not going to be low cost given the demand for SP.

If they can be signed for a low cost ... probably getting pitching version of Matt Carpenter.

Outfielder Robert Hassell III saw his prospect stock dip during a down year at the plate in 2023, but he finished the year on a high note by hitting .290/.366/.348 with 20 hits in 20 games in the Arizona Fall League.

Padres #11 overall ...

Giants say that Jung Hoo Lee is a "perfect fit" for their team but what are they expecting him to do in the lineup?  He is not a HR hitter, so is his role just to get on base at a high rate, which is what most teams see as a complementary but not carry the line-up kind of guy?  I liken him to Luis Arraez once he makes his adjustments to MLB, but somehow I don't think that's how the Giants see him - they even mentioned the fact he hit 23 HRs in one year but fail to mention that in only 1 other year in his 7 year career did he reach double digits.  Will Lee turn out to be DJ LeMahieu in LeMahieu's best years?

I think the Giants have put a lot of pressure on Lee to perform to a level he might not be comfortable to reach, so we'll see how he adjusts.  I really would have liked him near the top of the Padres line-up but not at 18.8M/year and not having him try to do more than what he has had success with in the KBO.  If this is the Giants only major acquisition of the off-season, then I don't think Lee is going push them past many teams in the West for a playoff spot.
