Looks as though the Cubs will be looking for RP once the CBA is signed. That is a poor crop.
Their SP seems serviceable but the everyday line-up is also weak ... in a division with StL and MILW would think they would be conservative and and focus on building for the future yet they signed Stroman to the starting staff and Gomes to catch ... decent money.
Maybe a home for some of the Padre "excess" bullpen arms ... maybe for a low A prospect.
Saw a mention on MLBTR that Ian Happ might be a trade candidate. I know that Preller was talking to the Cubs about Hosmer. His bat should play better at Wrigley. His power is not a product of Wrigley, and can play INF and OF.
So maybe Hosmer and Campusano and a RP or two for Happ and a prospect?

I could live with Happ in LF (albeit a poor fielder). 2 years control and about $7MM in ARB this year.
Don’t think the Cubs need (want) a catcher as the prime piece in return given all their other needs. Probably would make a pitch for either Abrams or Hassell but if the Padres covered maybe half of Hosmer’s 2022 salary … Cubs may go with a “package” of pitchers and next tier prospects.
A bit of a reach but a package surrounding Paddack, Knehr, Pagan (or similar) might get them to take the differential $13MM between Happ and Hosmer.

No doubt "talked about" but was it because the Cubs asked or the Padres offered him up as an option? Also, how did each side value Campusano in relation to the other pieces of the deal. Clearly the deal did not get done, so ?
Cubs are sitting with a quality catcher in Contreras (for 2022) and signed Gomes for 2022-24 (not great) and have a 22 year old prospect out for 2022 with TJ. So, pretty sure they would take an upside prospect such as Campusano ... just not thinking they would offer a return to his value level ... and that is the key.
Campusano for Happ even up .... maybe ... but no chance Happ and taking the contract of Hosmer. More likely the Cubs would take Hosmer and Campusano and give some lower level mid-range prospects. That Hosmer contract is a big drag and not sure that a top prospect included even offsets that ... and certainly does not equate to including a decent player in return.
Not sure where the Padres stand but a Happ for Campusano / Hosmer could play out if the Padres ate maybe $13MM in 2022 and a conditional buy down of maybe $5MM/yr for the final 3 years if Hosmer does not opt out. In 2022 the Padres payroll remains the same ... offense may be better while shifting the need to adding a 1B ... and reduces future payroll risk.

Quote from LynchMob on February 7, 2022, 11:33 amA pitcher who didn't quite make Keith Law's list of top 100 prospects at The Athletic ... and a warning to us Padres' fans ...
Ryan Pepiot, RHP, Los Angeles Dodgers
Age: 24 | 6-3 | 215 pounds
Bats: Right | Throws: Right
Drafted: No. 102 in 2019The Dodgers’ system is hilarious; I see at least four other guys who had a credible argument to be on the top 100 or this just-missed list. Pepiot has an 80 changeup, one of the best pitches of its type in baseball right now, along with an above-average fastball, although he didn’t dominate left-handed batters last year as you’d expect for someone with a change or splitter of that caliber. Instead, he uses it as much to neutralize right-handed bats as left, and I think he could pitch in the majors in relief right now. He has a simple delivery and gets on top of the ball well for some plane on the fastball and to help turn over that changeup. What he lacks is the command and control he’ll need to be a starter without an above-average breaking ball (for now, at least); he walked a man every other inning in Triple A, only getting through five innings twice in 11 starts because of his inefficiency. That said, it’s an 80 changeup, and helps the fastball play up as well, and a tighter slider or a bump in control would make him at least a back-end starter right now.

Quote from Randy Manese on February 7, 2022, 12:41 pmWith so many injuries last year to key players, Padres need to get the prospective 26 man roster on the field as soon as possible in order to evaluate where everyone is on their recovery schedule. Most of the position players' injuries seem not to be so serious as to prevent them from performing at expected levels although there is always the prospect of a Tatis serious injury ruining the season. Further, want to see how Campusano has progressed, and although not on the 40-man, how Abrams looks against major league talent.
On the other hand, really need to know how Clevinger, Darvish, Paddack, Lamet, Pomeranz and others have progressed in order to assess what else needs to be done with a staff that could be very good or very mediocre depending upon injuries. It will certainly help to get Morejon possibly back by mid-season and I believe Niebla will help Gore, Weathers and A Martinez progress.
I hope they end the lockout soon!

Although technically true the owners have a long memory and are not getting sucked into the same trap as in a previous negotiation.
Forget which year but the owners and the union … while in negotiations … began the season but in August (as I recall) the UNION called a strike once they got the economic advantage.
Players created the strike fund by getting paid for 4-5 months then pulled the plug knowing the owners make the biggest part of their money for the September stretch and the playoffs.
Not a good or bad scenario … just the most logical negotiation tactic by the owners to preserve their negotiation advantage. Basically BOTH sides start losing money if they don’t start on opening day … and that should be the attention of the players (and their families) to get a deal done sooner.
