Not a lot of love for Padre defenders.
I think Machado deserves it for his play ALL over the field. And for the life of me, can't figure out how Cronenworth gets left off the list?!

Quote from padscharg on October 29, 2021, 12:52 pmI think Cronenworth was denied because he didn't play enough innings at 2nd base, since he moved over to short for Tatis and also played first... but if Justin Turner can be considered for Silver Slugger at 2nd base when he did not play any innings there, I don't know what to think anymore

That should weaken the Giants a bit . I do have a great respect for anyone that leaves a ton of money on the table to be able to spend time with his family. Not many people could do that. You've had a great career Buster , enjoy your retirement and family time .

It will be nice that he wont kill SD anymore, it was a pleasure to watch him play.

Only eight other relievers have ever finished a season with an ERA under 1.00 and at least 54 innings thrown, according to Baseball Reference. The list includes Blake Treinen (2018), Zack Britton (2016), Wade Davis (2015), Fernando Rodney (2012), Eric O’Flaherty (2011), Jonathan Papelbon (2006), Chris Hammond (2002) and Dennis Eckersley (1990).

Quote from BoosterSD on November 16, 2021, 8:17 amAccording to MLBTR, two big names in the SP pool have signed contracts this morning. Syndergaard signs with LAA and Berrios resigns with TOR, both right around the $20M per year mark. So the market for the SP is getting smaller, and the market is starting to set. Cant see Stroman getting much more than these two IMO.

MLBTrader rumors predicted Stroman at $110MM/5 years ($22MM AAV). I am guessing a bit more either in AAV or in a 6th year. Only 30 with a 3.02 ERA in 2021 (3.63 career) has produced more than Rodriguez who just signed for $77MM/5 years or even Barrios $131MM/7 years.
Rumor is that both LAA and TOR are still going to be players for another SP in this market … so the supply is down but the buyers may not be diminished.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 16, 2021, 11:12 amIt used to be that contracts for pitchers beyond 3 years was a rare event given that injuries that incapacitate a pitcher for long periods during a season and eventually affect his overall effectiveness during the length of the contract are not all that uncommon. 5 years for Rodriguez and 7 years for Berrios is much more than most teams would want to gamble on but the Tigers and Blue Jays have a lot of cap space so it may not mean so much to them to take this chance.
On the other hand, I'm looking at Clevinger for 1 year at 8M vs. Syndergaard for 1 year at 21M and the last two years of Snell's contract totalling 29.7M compared to 30.8M for Rodriguez over a similar period and I have to say we are potentially getting more for our money for our two pitchers in the next year (or so) than either the Angels or Tigers, respectfully.
Musgrove made only 4.5M last year and with he and Clevinger both eligible for FA after this season, it seems we can only afford to extend one of the two at the going rate for #2 to #3 starters, i.e., around 20-24M per year. With the injury experience last year and the hoped for development of some of the younger pitchers, I'm guessing that the Padres add a back-end starter in FA, like Davies, or trade for someone like Bassitt, whose track record is not as long and won't cost them that much. Would love to get Stroman or Gausman or Ray or even Scherzer/ Verlander/Kershaw but probably have to move both Hosmer and Myers and that would open up even more holes on the offense.
Let's see what happens before 19 November and then that frenetic period between then and the lapse of the current CBA. Should be interesting and Preller always seems to wait until the last moment to announce his deals.

Quote from fenn68 on November 16, 2021, 12:32 pmI would not rule out extending BOTH Musgrove (maybe before 2022) and Clevinger (during the season if shows healthy).
If we start with the 2022 expect payroll (and ARB decision for these two) will only need about +$12MM to retain each ($24MM +/-). Myers departure will clear $19MM (after buyout).
Addtionally, another $20MM should be generated by the departures of Frazier, Stammen, Johnson, and Strahm plus the drop in Hosmer’s contact even if he does not opt out. That should cover increases for Tatis, Cronenworth, Grisham with some left over for the missing hitters.
More motivation comes from Darvish’s $20MM will be off the books in 2024 (too old to extend) as will Snell’s contract (he too might get extended if Paddack, Weathers, Gore don’t develop). Lamet will also become a FA in 2024.
