Probably the best day the Rox will have all year. They need to tear it all down for prospects on a 3 year turnaround plan

Since other teams are "in on him" he is not going to sign a minor league deal since some other team will likely be offering an immediate ML starting slot. So IF the Padres pursued him:
- how much money would they have to offer along with a guaranteed starting slot?
- who gets bumped from the starting rotation ... so far we really don't know if Lamet is out longer or Weathers is out long? They could be at 6 next week if Lamet / Weathers are OK to go.
- who gets bumped from the 26 man / 40 man?
Plus at 37 coming off a 2020 with an ERA over 6 in 11 starts ... and considering he didn't sign with anyone over the winter ... pretty big gamble on him stepping in effectively without a ST.
Probably would go to Gore before Sanchez if they were down to a 7th SP. Now if they were in mid-season and having difficulty fielding 5 SP might see Preller move to a trade deadline deal.

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 29, 2021, 3:07 pmYou're probably right. Sanchez is definitely going to get a MLB deal. The Pads WERE a bad fit for a Sanchez/Hamels vet 1 yr flyer type b/c of the young guys rising... didn't want to block them. Our overloaded tight out of options bullpen options just make it worse; how do you even create room on the 26-man roster?
Same may still be true. If Weathers was out 2-3 weeks, but Lamet built up slowly over 4 starts... then where would that leave Sanchez? It SEEMS like an easy trade out in this SP starved season... but the vet & his agent are obviously going to see the situation & not want to get into it in the first place.... "handshake agreement" not to be traded until deadline?
On the other hand, what if another SP goes down at some point? The innings to get through the season are simply are not there.

Quote from fenn68 on April 29, 2021, 3:28 pmI suspect that if they get to mid season needing another starter ... after the minor leaguers have 5-10 starts under their belts ... Padres would dip into that pool for whomever is hot if the need is perceived as short term. Otherwise, Preller is making a deal with some team out of contention for a serviceable piece ... probably a “rental” for a lower level prospect.
With the current roster of arms .... loaded with players out of options active and on the IL ... hard to make a preemptive move of an added starter without creating some cracks elsewhere.
