Quote from TatisJr on September 26, 2019, 11:09 amI think MadBum returns to the Giants. I think Zaidi would move on, but Giants ownership is very loyal to their players. They have a history of paying big to lock up guys they love. MadBum is a legend and fan favorite so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Giants make him the biggest offer.

Pads; K. Greene, Josh Barfield, Damian Jackson, Rubén Rivera, Adrián González, Sean Burroughs, Ben Davis,
Giants: Buster Posey, Joe Panick, Pablo Sandoval, Brandon Crawford,
So, when they are talented he plays them, the only difference with other manager is that he gives the veterans a few more starts, but when they are talented he doesnt care whether they are old or Young, I mean the guy has three world series rings, he took the Pads to one World Series, and made the playoffs with them 4 times as a manager, I have no idea if somebody would dare saying that the '07 and' 10 meltdwons would have happened if Bochy was at the helm, anyone? Even this year with that awful team the Giants have, he gave them somewhat of a shot at the playoff run, and will finish better that the Pads standing wise, I dont know if he would be the right hire, but definitely he wont be the wrong one, and sometimes thats all it takes
Alex, you make some great points that I can’t combat. I actually think this year was one of Bochys best as a manger. This years Giants team didn’t have much in talent and they were in the race for awhile. They played above their talent. Bochy definitely had some years in SD where he simply didn’t have the talent to win and I don’t blame him for that. My frustration with him came more from him playing journeyman vets over giving young guys a chance. David Newhan, Gary Mathews Jr are the only two names off the top of my head that I remember being angry about him not playing more and neither went on to be stars anyway. I’m sure there are others, but he was here a long time. Bochy would 100 percent be an upgrade to the BB, Murphy and Green. Bochy is a great guy and will be in the HOF, I just don’t see it as a fit and fear it would be more of a Fowler PR move over an AJP move. Bochy hoisting a title trophy in San Diego would make for a great story, I’ll give ya that.

Quote from fenn68 on September 26, 2019, 12:02 pmI do want a manager for the longer haul which somewhat biases me away from Bochy and Maddon. Now this I admit this should not matter but health, energy, mental sharpness, and ability to relate is a risk as one ages. Bochy will be 65 and has had four “minor” heart procedures since 2015 ... any concern? With that, can you rely on him being the manager for the long haul. (I do speak from the perspective of an “old guy”). Yes, they MIGHT keep it together ... many do ... but that is not the norm as people age.
Bochy may be one of the more dedicated mangers out there but managing where he has chosen to live / retire (think Poway) and with a major penchant for fishing and fine wines ... will being in his late 60s take the edge off.
Just something to factor in to the decision process.

Quote from TatisJr on September 26, 2019, 12:10 pmMoises Alou has withdrawn his name from the managerial opening. Bummer, I really had him high on my list. He wants to spend time with family, can’t blame him for that.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 26, 2019, 12:11 pmI loved Bochy when he was our manager and there is no doubt that he has had tremendous success. I just kinda get that "crusty old man" feeling from him. Like he might be resistant to change and using the latest analytics. Does anyone know if that is true?

Quote from fenn68 on September 26, 2019, 12:58 pmWell, Monday we should hear the full slate of managers not returning and can view the full list of open slots. Not sure if I am current but
In the bank: SD (Green fired); SF (Bochy retired); and KC (Yost retired)
On the bubble: Cubs (Maddon out likely); Pitt (Hurdle per management is not a lock); Phil (rumor Kapler is iffy); LAA (if the bump Asmus for Maddon);
Without rumors but can the managers in Detroit, Baltimore, Colorado really be save ... along with a few others. Would not be surprised if as many as 10 openings are in play by this time next week.
Sort of a multi-tier game. Some teams may want the Maddon / Girardi / Bochy profile and only a few teams probably interest them. Others will not play at that level and will aim at the Espada / Loretta / Bard profile. See a risk problem ... if a team wants the higher profile but loses to other teams and that takes “weeks” will the better lower profile options be gone as the rest of the teams focus and sign that tier sooner? Some team is going to be standing when the music stop ... although they will present their final selection as the guy the always wanted.
Dance around and see Maddon to LAA, Girardi to PHIL, and Bochy to the CUBS while Bard goes to Detroit, Loretta to KC, Espada to Colorado (or similar) and the Padres end up with ??? But maybe not their #1 or #2 or #3.

Quote from 84padres on September 26, 2019, 7:47 pmGardenhire couldn't be any safer in Detroit an Bochy will only manage in SD. I think Kapler will get 1 more year to fix his shortcomings. I'm guessing Maddon to SD (but secretly rooting for bochy ),Girardi to Cubs and who cares to KC and Pit.

Quote from fenn68 on September 29, 2019, 11:23 amRecent reporting is suggesting the the Padres want a new manager who immediately will command respect in the clubhouse and have a “presence” ... whatever that means. Does’t mean they will get him but may be a point to target. Depends on one’s view of individuals but on the surface there are:
1. Joe Maddon (age 65)
2. Bruce Bochy (age 64)
3. Joe Girardi (age 54)
4. Ron Washington (age 67)
5. Dusty Baker (age 70)
Since I would want a manager (besides being a good manager) ... one that will be around for years to create some stability as the team moves into its playoff level stage. Baker and Washington are too old to have that confidence (plus I do remember how much they each were criticized in their final years of managing). Maddon and Bochy are on the bubble age-wise so some risk getting 5 years out of them at peak managerial performance ... then personally don’t like Maddon’s character.
So, based on my limited knowledge about Girardi as a manager ... think the Padres should have him #1 on their list. He was very, very successful in NY (not easy place to play or manage). He clearly wants to manage and if SD is the best offer he would accept.
