Andy Green relieved of duties.
Quote from fenn68 on September 24, 2019, 10:56 amJust a bit of a scorecard of managers on the current 10 playoff bound teams and their profile when hired:
A.J. Hinch (Houston) ..... hired in AZ at age 34 and lasted less than 2 seasons then sat out until Houston hired him
Aaron Boone (NYY) ... younger with no ML managerial experience
Rocco Baldelli (MINN) .... younger with no ML managerial experience
Bob Melvin (OAK) ... in OAK for some time after a short managerial sting in SEA (03-04 ... losing record ... fired) and in AZ (04-08 ... losing record ... fired).
Kevin Cash (TB) ... younger with no ML managerial experience
Dave Roberts (LAD) ... 1 day as manager of the Padres but otherwise no ML managerial experience
Brian Snitker (ATL) ... older with no ML managerial experience
Mike Shidt (StL) .. older with no ML managerial experience
Dave Martinez (WASH) ... older with no ML managerial experience
Craig Counsell (MILW) ... younger with no ML managerial experience
So, for success in the current MLB universe, experience as a ML manager (success or not) is not a need for a winner. So look for no ML experience as a manager or find one with minimal experience who got fired by AZ. 🙂
The past is not a predictor of the future and the likes of Maddon, Bochy, Yost, Mattingly became "losers" in 2019. In all cases it might have to do with a bit with the players on the field ... but I digress.

Quote from fenn68 on September 24, 2019, 11:43 amAlways interesting when a name pops in the local media ... in this case for manager ... and my first reaction is WHO?
How about Joe Espada!
Had to do some research, he is 44 originally from Puerto Rico with some solid background as the 3rd base coach for the NYY and now the bench coach for Houston. Key positions with two current winning organizations ... both positions earned at a young age. Young, Latin American background, speaks Spanish, out of two currently very successful organizations with key roles .... checks a lot of boxes.
A graduate out of a college in Mobile, Ala and married to a doctor.
Apparently a great advocate of shifting / analytics (Houston shifts maybe more than anyone), so potentially a good fit with the Padres front office philosophy.
Nothing to say yea or nay based on my knowledges BUT does have a very intriguing profile that actually could fit for the long run as the Padre manager.

Quote from fenn68 on September 25, 2019, 8:03 amListened to Girardi on one of the talk shows ... clearly articulate probably from his time working on the MLB Network as an analyst. He clearly wants to manager and he would be interested in SD (my read) but if the Cubs come calling that sounds like his first choice (that has been rumored for some time) but carefully avoided a direct statement with Maddon still in the job.
What appears to be setting up is an interesting game across MLB on hiring mangers ... selection and timing so as not to miss one of a team's preferred choice. Might see a lot of firings ASAP to allow the teams to get into the interview game as the season ends.
IF (as expected) Maddon is let go at the end of the season that may have a couple of ripple effects. On one had Maddon will have some suitors with the LAA now rumored into the mix (ending Asmus' one year run). Then if the Girardi / Cubs come to together ... what does that mean for the future of Loretta (considered a candidate for the Padres). Would Asmus become a candidate for the Padres? Then a fair chance PHIL parts ways with Kapler and Maddon is from that area ... they have stupid money to spend ... would he be lured there? Then still be in play is the NYM spot ... few seem to like Callaway as their manager. Oh yeh, SF has an opening.
Heads are rolling ... so competition probably will not make it easy to lure the #1 choice if that choice is in demand.

Did hear that Showalter is not being considered by the Padres.

Why have we not heard Brian Kenny's name?

Quote from TatisJr on September 25, 2019, 9:23 amAfter listening to Acee on a podcast some concerns of mine about the next managerial hire seemed to be confirmed. Acee says Bochy is interested in Padres job. This confirms what I’ve heard in some Bay Area media outlets that the Padres job is the only job Bochy would take if offered. It’s either retirement or the Pads gig, nothing else interest him. Acee goes on to say that Bochy is “high”, “real high” on ownerships list. Bochy is a HOF manager, but I do not want him with this young squad. He’s never been great with young players. My fear is Fowler and co will hire Bochy to excite the fan base and put butts in seats. I don’t see a big FA signing taking place this offseason so maybe ownership thinks a splashy and familiar face like Bochy will fire fans up for 2020. If Bochy is the hire I will feel like it was ownerships doing to appeal to fans instead of AJs hiring. We need the right captain for a young squad, not a PR hire. Hopefully I’m reading too much into this, but there definitely seems to be some smoke here. Really crossing my fingers for a Maddon, Alou type with Washington, Loretta and Bard as my second tier.

Quote from Alex Tamayo on September 25, 2019, 9:27 pmYoung players only from the top of my head Bochy played regularly:
Pads; K. Greene, Josh Barfield, Damian Jackson, Rubén Rivera, Adrián González, Sean Burroughs, Ben Davis,
Giants: Buster Posey, Joe Panick, Pablo Sandoval, Brandon Crawford,
So, when they are talented he plays them, the only difference with other manager is that he gives the veterans a few more starts, but when they are talented he doesnt care whether they are old or Young, I mean the guy has three world series rings, he took the Pads to one World Series, and made the playoffs with them 4 times as a manager, I have no idea if somebody would dare saying that the '07 and' 10 meltdwons would have happened if Bochy was at the helm, anyone? Even this year with that awful team the Giants have, he gave them somewhat of a shot at the playoff run, and will finish better that the Pads standing wise, I dont know if he would be the right hire, but definitely he wont be the wrong one, and sometimes thats all it takes

Nope. #1 best contract .... #2 playing for a contender ... then on the fringe manager / city (he lives on a ranch in North Carolina so being from the South and being closer to his home could play a factor as he nears the end).

IF they will pony up the best contract .... last winter did not show Atlanta's burning desire to spend big / commit long. Big on Donadson but only 1 year (that will not get it done with Bumgarner.
Watch out for PHIL ... still have that stupid money to spend and have the basics of a legit contender with Harper, McCutcheon returning, Realmuto, Hoskins, Segura .... a need for more effective SP. PHIL is not that far from North Carolina.
