40-man Roster Before & After Rule 5
Quote from fenn68 on December 18, 2019, 8:37 amThis will not happen but:
IF KC does not move Merrifield this winter (and not really motivated to given his 4 years of cheap control baring that illusive overwhelming offer), then can this deal be revisited next winter ... Merrifield still has 3 control years ... still has a cheap contract ... and Profar is a FA?
Now add to the mix Eric Hosmer as he enters years 4 and 5 of his contract ... without no trade protection but before year 6 when he gets 10-5 full no trade rights with the Padres. His remaining 5 year AAV would be about $16MM assuming he did not opt out after year 5.
Some incentive to move him by the Padres before year 6 .. in KC liked by the organization, fans and given his reputation in the clubhouse good for a rebuilding team. Could a trade based around Hosmer - Merrifield be constructed?

They suggest two different scenarios.
Patino for Merrifield straight up.
Or,
Two out of the three following players, Morejon, Weathers, and Baez. Plus one or two mid level guys, maybe like a Lawson or Torrens?
Would you do either of those to get a very inexpensive Whit?
A batting order of Whit, Grisham, Machado, Hosmer, Tatis, Mejia, Pham, Myers should be very productive v RHP. I know I should probably switch Pham and Grisham, but I like the more traditional R, L, batting orders. Myers at 8 should be a good spot for him.
Not #1 ... Padres would have a better chance of getting to the World Series with Patino as an upper rotation SP than with Merrifield as a very good 2B for the next 4 years. Padres have really only 2 (Gore / Patino) that carry some consensus as upper rotation arms to add to Paddack / Lamet ... and a World Series contender needs multiple options / depth. Take the risk by holding on both Gore and Patino.
Could be convinced on a Morejon or Baez plus Weathers package base ...
I think we will have a couple guys step up this year towards the Gore/Patino level.
Not "to" their level....but Cantillo in particular I think will impress enough to move into our top 10.
I also really like Efrain Contreras, Mason Fox and Omar Cruz to make big moves this year.

Quote from JasonE135 on December 18, 2019, 1:33 pmFrom last year to now I have seen many trade proposals from almost every single team for Ian Anderson and Dustin May. Those two happen to come in just behind Patino in the top 100. As much as I really like Morejon and Baez, I would absolutely rather give them up than Patino.
As far as Weathers, I will never like him. I watched the run up to that draft and I couldn’t believe that Matthew Liberator was still there at our pick. Yet we took Weathers.
Several of our lower level pitchers could move up yes, but none of them can be counted on to. Patino should be ready by the end of 2020. The other guys are years away.

Right there with you on the 2018 draft. I didn't understand the Weathers pick over Libertorre then and makes even less sense now. That said, Weathers is not chopped liver. If he develops into a #3 that is an excellent outcome even with his draft position. Ditto Libertorre. Both have a good shot to get there, but L has more ceiling beyond that where W doesn't. W vs L, hmmm.

Yes. I THINK I would do either of those scenarios. I would try Baez, Weathers, Torrens... but think it might take more than that.
Patino straight up is agonizing. He's an elite prospect for sure, but his size makes me nervous. Could make the argument you're better off trading just 1 guy than 3, even though the 1 guy is "better"...
Think there is a very close to 0% chance Pham is batting any lower than 2nd on this team, even with adding Merrifield:
vs RHP: Whit, Pham, Tatis/Machado, Machado/Tatis/Hosmer, Hosmer/Tatis, Myers/Mejia, Mejia/Myers, Grisham
vs LHP: Whit, Pham, Tatis/Machado, Machado/Tatis, Myers/Mejia, Mejia/Myers, Margot, Profar (for Hosmer)
Hedges always bats 8th. Tatis & Machado are the big 30 HR+ power sources now. I really like the idea of Tatis 3rd; can live with his K's more there than leading off. Doesn't "waste" his power as much, but 1st 3 guys all 20+ SB potential. Can't justify putting Machado lower than 4th even vs RHP; may want to stick at #3. 5th feels too low for Tatis even vs RHP too.
Would be a transformation from last year's live and (mostly) die by hitting timely solo HR's team.

Yes but the must be put on waivers and can be claimed by any team without the restriction of keeping them on the 26 man roster ... only on the 40 man.

Thank you. Another poster commented about Shogo still being available and the Padres in contention for the player. Can anybody from the 40 man roster be moved without consequence i.e. avoiding waivers (I am not sure I even have that part correct). At this point, after seeing the push for SP, I wouldn't even want to lose Margevicious without some sort of return (confused as I am as to why he is on the 40). I am really surprised teams haven't inquired about pitchers not named Gore,Patino, or Lamet, or at least I haven't heard of it.
Final question (sorry for these basic questions), what does it mean when a player is "out of (assuming MiLB) options."

Quote from BoosterSD on December 25, 2019, 8:23 amNo, a player on the 40 man gets DFA'd (Designated for Assignment), during the 10 day DFA period, any team can claim him. SD could pull him off DFA and keep him on the 40 man, can work out a trade with the interested team, or simply let the other team have him. After the DFA period, depending on the service time of said player, the team can then assign the player to the MiLs, or the player can elect FA at that time.
Once a player is out of options, the team can no longer send the player to the MiLs, with out putting that player through the DFA process and exposing that player to other teams. There have been a few times where the team will tell a player they are hurt, and put them on the IL, and then send that player to AAA to "rehab".
