If the Padres sign a FA for the 40 man, there is a good chance Preller discussed a number of his current 40 man as trade candidates over the past couple of months and just executes a deal without going the DFA route on someone.
Padres may be better off dealing a “better” 40 man player than working a deal on whomever they have as #40 or even letting him clear waivers. Might get a more useful return for the future. Note that in either case the return should be a non-roster prospect to clear the 40 man issue.

For instance....seeing rumors we are interested in Shogo.
My guess is if we sign him and we have no takers for Myers....we would have to have a taker for Naylor or Margot.
My preference would be Naylor as I think he belongs in the AL and Margot gives us the defense/base running we can use.
He also could start in CF against tough lefties with Shogo getting the majority of starts(110-120).
Wondering what kind of trade value Naylor has?

Yes but more options in the AL.
You would think he would be worth at least one “good” prospect plus another lower level.
He was top 100 himself just a couple years ago and hasn’t played enough to change that value either way I wouldn’t think.
So maybe a 50-100 prospect plus another?
Of course we could always package him for more return with either a ML arm(Quantril/Morejon/Baez) or another prospect.
Just depends on what the team interested is looking for/needs.
Would the Angels be interested in Naylor/Quantrill?
I’d still like Marsh even if we get Shogo.

Don’t see much of a TRADE value in Naylor ... primarily because teams just don’t prioritize 1B/DH types highly ... especially “prospects”. Unless the player is an productive, established 1B/DH type even the veterans have some difficulty getting signed as a FA.
Best chance to move him and get a quality return piece is including him in a bigger deal ... he becomes the 2nd or 3rd piece behind the primary trade chip.
To get maximum trade value out of Naylor the Padres would have to let him play at the ML level and he has to hit (really hit).
Remember the Padres got him as part of the return in the Cashner deal (and he was an early 1st round pick .. so highly thought of).

Yep...I'm just thinking ahead to "if" we sign Shogo we gotta make room on the roster and you would think at least one outfielder would have to go.

I guess they could go with Pham - Margot / Akiyama (L) - Myers and then one of Grisham, Cordero, or Naylor with the other two in AAA ... all have minor league options.
That may make a lot of sense if the Padres want to do some winning in 2020 ... not sure can do more than guess which of Grisham, Cordero, or Naylor can be productive in 2020 ... I guess we can say the same about Akiyama. Difficult.

I want to see Grisham/Cordero in RF.
Not a big Naylor fan and would like to see him in AAA raking to reestablish his trade value some.
I just don't see Naylor as a regular everyday player for us.....anyone?
So if he is forever a platoon/PH for us he would have more value as a trade piece.
Plus I love the athleticism that OF gives us.
Pham-Margot/Shogo-Grisham/Cordero is very good defensively and on the bases as well.

Re-establish value? Naylors value is at an all time high after a very successful rookie yr.. His projection has him trending way up from there.. He is a very young 5 yrs of control pure hitter.. More valuable to AL team
