40-man Roster Before & After Rule 5

PreviousPage 6 of 10Next

I remember this story and am still completely blown away by it.

Our new pitcher Brady Feigl.

How is this even possible?

Two professional baseball pitchers....both 6’4”,both red headed and both named Brady Feigel and NOT related?

Get outta here!

So what's a likely over/under for players Pads lose in R5?  I'm going with 2.  Likely RP's, but Gettys/Reed/E. Ruiz possible too.  Maybe Bachar.

Still think Pads should have DFA'd Espinoza leading to a Trade where we probably could have recouped a Top 30 prospect not on 40-man and opened up a spot for a lesser, older, but healthy guy who is more likely to help at MLB in 20-21 then Espinoza.

Well, technically "1" (Megill), but really sort of 2 with the trade of Buddy Reed as the PTBNL for Profar.

Preller's gamble paid off: if it costs Megill to hold Espinoza, but you still have all the other RP's not selected, that's a win.

I realize no one picked Reed in Rule 5, and he would be WAY down in Pads pecking order in OF now, but giving up last year's consenseus #19 & #20 prospects (probably still at bottom of top 30?) for ONE year of Profar @ 5.7 MM (non-tender candidate) is a little steep.

Round 1

7. Padres: LHP Brady Feigl (Rangers)

40. A's: RHP Deivy Mendez (Padres)

How many players have we had start a game at 2b since Preller took over?

I know it's a big number.

Obviously he doesn't prioritize the position but you would think we could find one guy who couple play an entire season(or more) at the position?

I counted about 15 in the last 5 years.

Is it gonna be Profar for the next couple seasons or is he still looking for "the guy"?

He ... and most of baseball ... really does not make 2B a major priority unless they stumble onto an Altuve type.

Profar is a FA after 2020 and at currently over $5MM if he has a good season how much would the Padres do to resign him? Depending on the other moving parts ... Cronenworth, Miller, and Quiroz could all be in the running. Plus IF Arias hits in AA ... he might make the Tatis jump?

Profar probably closer to a trade deadline move than a re-sign.

So does the fact that we've had 15 different 2b in the last 5 years make it more likely AJ gives up a ton for a guy like Merrifield or less likely?

Either he's looking to shore up the position for a few years once and for all or he doesn't value it enough to give what it would take to get the affordable productive Merrifield.

I'm guessing the Royals will not trade him to SD without one of Gore/Patino/Abrams included in the deal.

Probably NOT if shoring up 2nd for the next 3-4 years is the reason. Yes, if adding Merrifield’s offense in the next couple of years is the reason. KC has been using Merrifield a lot in the OF ... so Preller could see Merrifield as an OF or 2B given other moves clearing spaces.

With Tatis here and the upside 2B options coming in a few years: Abrams, Arias, Marcano ... fair option to bridge with Profar (2020) and recalibrate for 2021 (Merrifield may still be available from KC). Save the “elite prospects” that KC would demand and use any other prospects for different upgrades.

As much as I would like adding Merrifield now ... not worth using an elite prospect.

Reading a blurb on Friorsonbase, he has spoke with the same type of KC website to see what it would take to get Merrifield.

They suggest two different scenarios.

Patino for Merrifield straight up.

Or,

Two out of the three following players, Morejon, Weathers, and Baez. Plus one or two mid level guys, maybe like a Lawson or Torrens?

Would you do either of those to get a very inexpensive Whit?

A batting order of Whit, Grisham, Machado, Hosmer, Tatis, Mejia, Pham, Myers should be very productive v RHP. I know I should probably switch Pham and Grisham, but I like the more traditional R, L, batting orders. Myers at 8 should be a good spot for him.

I would definitely do deal #2

One of Morejon or Baez along with Weathers I would be OK with.

I don't trust Weathers to break into our rotation in 2-3 years and would prefer the offense over the upside of Morejon and Baez.

Both could end up in our BP or traded in other deals anyway.

Not #1 ... Padres would have a better chance of getting to the World Series with Patino as an upper rotation SP than with Merrifield as a very good 2B for the next 4 years. Padres have really only 2 (Gore / Patino) that carry some consensus as upper rotation arms to add to Paddack / Lamet ... and a World Series contender needs multiple options / depth. Take the risk by holding on both Gore and Patino.

Could be convinced on a Morejon or Baez plus Weathers package base ...
