So they kept Oña and only DFA’d Martini. I guess they are still high on him. Anyone surprised they didn’t keep Reed or any of the others?

No ... super athletic but have not shown consistent hitting in the minors ... similar to a lot of "prospects" across the minor leagues ... so, basically replaceable if needed.

Minor surprise that none of the 100MPH RP did not sneak in over Margevicius who probably has a very limited ceiling. Then again, the developmental staff may see them having "flaws" limiting their upside.

A case of many over evaluating marginal prospects not in the Top rankings and under evaluating the current 40 man potential. The more we see them the less we like them and move to "hope" on the unknown?

We will see in the Rule 5 if any are taken (then if any are kept). Probably safer than adding them now and exposing someone else to waivers (and an easier claim scenario). Will have to address that if they sign a FA or two so at least the lower hanging fruit is still available for DFA plus they buy time for a multi-player for 1 trade to clear some spots for FA signings. In a sense, maybe the best approach to keep the maximum amount of talent.

"In a sense, maybe the best approach to keep the maximum amount of talent."  Not sure you wanted to word your thoughts this way, but I think pretty much every fan and professional associated with The Game agrees with you. Civility is not dead.

Not surprised on ranked prospects Esteury Ruiz (way too raw) or Reed (collegiate version of Gettys, and Edward Olivares has just outplayed them both).

But a little surprised Pads didn't add at least 1 RP like Guerrero.  But of course they did add the RP they had to--Munoz--in July, plus Bednar in Sept, plus 3 Cuban "SP"s Morejon, Baez, Bolanos too.  Guess they feel their depth on 40 AND among guys that won't ALL be selected in R5 is good enough to warrant not adding another RP or 2 to tight 40-man.

And more good news.. Ruiz has one more year before he has to be protected..

I think it was another "E.R.":  Eguy Rosario.  But also on the list of potential R5 picks, so nice he's "ours".

How long do we have to wait to know if any of those left unprotected get picked up by another team?

I believe the article 3Finger  attached suggested the 12th, David.

I'm bummed they didn't protect Valdez! Still, he's pretty raw, I'm hoping no one wants to keep him on the MLB roster all year long and we can bring him back.

Yes, think Rule 5 Draft is on Dec 12th last day of winter meetings

So what's a likely over/under for players Pads lose in R5?  I'm going with 2.  Likely RP's, but Gettys/Reed/E. Ruiz possible too.  Maybe Bachar.

Still think Pads should have DFA'd Espinoza leading to a Trade where we probably could have recouped a Top 30 prospect not on 40-man and opened up a spot for a lesser, older, but healthy guy who is more likely to help at MLB in 20-21 then Espinoza.

I can see maybe NYY taking a flier on Gettys to pair with Gardner until Hicks recovers from TJ surgery and then gives him back to SD.
