40-man Roster Before & After Rule 5

PreviousPage 4 of 10Next

I can easily see Martini and Margevicius DFA for the first two adds (if their are two considered with greater potential.

IF not “larger deal” .... Preller could have a group on the 40 man that he may not consider key to the future (maybe more than his targeted adds) and make a few DFA to not only add space for Rule 5 but for potential FA signings. Avila yes but might see Wingenter and/or Perdomo ... maybe they slide through and go to EP but maybe multiple teams put in a claim giving a window for Preller to make a minor deal (low A ball type). Given the demand for RP ... that might stir some action.

No idea the thinking on Kinsler but really doubt Espinosa goes .... too high a ceiling still and we would be talking about the 40th man .. no problem. Then he can go on the 60 day DL at some point to open a slot for a non-roster player for opening day (or later). Think Gore / Patino / Trammel / et al ... none on the 40 man

Really think Avila first DFA (if any); high likelihood he ends up outrighted like Nix, since will miss entire season due to injury.

Next IMO is Margevicius, but a SP who flashed success in MLB so quickly (but way down depth chart) might be more highly rated than obvious stopgap but current MLB value/insurance guy Martini... we might find out in a few hours....

Last year, of 51 guys on the "40" man roster, all but 2 (Espinoza, & Edward Olivares) played in MLB.  It is NOT "no problem" to keep a guy on a "tight" 40-man  all year with zero chance of MLB.   To me, inclusion ON 40-man MEANS: "will play in MLB this year".  Going on 60-IL when ST starts does open a spot, but doesn't really solve anything, since the spot goes away when he's activated (even if not till offseason), plus the "pinch" points of the tight roster are:

  1.  Right now (R5 protects) = ? # spots
  2. Before ST starts:  Seems like Pads need to add by FA &/or Trade minimum:  1 SP, 1 RP, 1 LH OF = + 3
  3. In season additions:  Projects to at least:  Gore, Trammell, Patino.  Likely 1 or more RP's at some point = + 3
  4. Next offseason:  Eligible for R5 =  Hudson Potts, Reggie Lawson, Mason Thompson, Tirso Ornelas, Jeisson Rosario, Gabe Arias, Tucupita Marcano, rest of Big 2016 Intl class (Almanzar, etc), plus any guys eligible but not selected this year.   Offset by "true" Free agents; right now just Garrett Richards & Yates (who could be extended).

(Avila &) Espinoza ultimately competing with all of them.  With Espinoza's pedigree but injury situation, one can make a strong argument that you DFA him with a small % chance of retaining him, but more likely outcome is multiple teams would put in waiver claims, and you end up trading him for a decent non-40 man prospect.

Less than 3 hours to go ... no leaks (normal for the Padres) and, as of yet, no deals. Preller has to be really working the phones but looking more like a series of “house cleaning” moves are more likely than anything big.

Man, the past few winters have been seriously boring!

AJ needs to make something happen. Whilst I'm not expecting a Caminiti/Finley deal, we need to do something big.

I reported this earlier and just got it re-confirmed by Padres officials. INF Eguy Rosario does NOT need to be placed on the 40-man roster today and is NOT Rule 5 draft eligible this year. He was signed (and assigned) after the 2015 DSL season, so his clock is pushed back a year

======

So, apparently the critical date to get an international player from the Caribbean is the end of the DSL season to delay Rule 5 eligibility.

So how often to we hear a July 2nd signing that is in reality an agreement to sign after the DSL season ends ... they would not be playing in the DSL that year anyway. Makes abundant sense ... especially for the "better" signings.

Ok deadline passed and? Wonder if this is like at TDL where it'll take a while to get info on last minute deals?

Casavall on Twitter says Ona rostered and Martini DFA

So they kept Oña and only DFA’d Martini. I guess they are still high on him. Anyone surprised they didn’t keep Reed or any of the others?

Not really. Reed to me is Getty's 2.0.  Never gonna be more than a 6th OF up and down at best. Can't do the hardest thing in major pro sports: hit professional pitching above A ball.  Be cool if one of them figured it out. Both are great otherwise.

Rest of guys are victims of the system depth.  I think Guerrero is a good risk for DET or BAL. Same for Bachar.  Good stuff and some upside.

No ... super athletic but have not shown consistent hitting in the minors ... similar to a lot of "prospects" across the minor leagues ... so, basically replaceable if needed.

Minor surprise that none of the 100MPH RP did not sneak in over Margevicius who probably has a very limited ceiling. Then again, the developmental staff may see them having "flaws" limiting their upside.

A case of many over evaluating marginal prospects not in the Top rankings and under evaluating the current 40 man potential. The more we see them the less we like them and move to "hope" on the unknown?

We will see in the Rule 5 if any are taken (then if any are kept). Probably safer than adding them now and exposing someone else to waivers (and an easier claim scenario). Will have to address that if they sign a FA or two so at least the lower hanging fruit is still available for DFA plus they buy time for a multi-player for 1 trade to clear some spots for FA signings. In a sense, maybe the best approach to keep the maximum amount of talent.
