30-man Active O.D., 40-man MLB, 60-man "Taxi" Rosters

Apparently Gore was hit around quite a bit during the intrasquad game.  Dont expect him to be on the OD roster (per AJ Cassavel)

It would be ludicrously stupid to NOT gain an extra year of control over Gore (& Patino) by having them "down" for just (minimum)  7 days.

Would literally be sacrificing a year control over either or both for 1 start or maybe 2-3 RP appearances in a season that could fall apart any time & get cancelled.  Even if either were dominantly obviously 1 of the best P's, it STILL wouldn't be worth it....

The "if it were a normal season, they'd be up by now" makes no sense.  They aren't there yet.  Both were clearly headed to AA in March before the shutdown.

Agree ... the on-going speculation that Gore / Patino would be (should be) on the opening day roster from a number of the media pundits just never made any sense. Two great PROSPECTS that have barely got their heads above A+ ball ... stepping into a 2020 team that is aiming to contend ... with a top line bullpen and an "incumbent" starting staff of Lamet, Richards, Paddack, Davies, Lucchesi, Quantrill that by every measure is a more reliable bet TODAY just is off base. Then add the business logic of losing control ... whew.

Shouldn't confuse the POTENTIAL for the future with PRODUCTION today ... especially for a team that has a chance to contend with the incumbents.

If they pitch well in Camp they need to be the first ones up when needed.

But they don't need to be on the opening day 30

The only reason I can see the media trying to push the Gore and Patino making the OD roster is it gives them another talking point for stories.  However, as much as we love Gore and Patino updates, I am pretty sure we would all rather hear about Richards, Lamet, Paddack, etc...  Heck I would rather hear about Gerardo Reyes and Javy Guerra than them.  They have a drastically better chance of making the roster than either.

What is a great question is whether Morejon and Baez make the OD roster.  If you still see them as top 100 prospects you want them to start and keep service time down.  If Morejon has fallen so far down the depth chart that he no longer matters, then have him make it as middle relief.

People are so incredibly impatient nowadays. Paddack was just a rookie last year. He went through a bad stretch and still finished with a 3.33 ERA. He rebuilt his curveball this offseason, adding horizontal break and working on his control. Can he be a true 3 pitch pitcher now? Can he push his ERA under 3.00? If so he can be a true ACE and possibly one of the best pitchers in the game. Lamet and Richards just came back from Tommy John surgery. Those two both have some of the best stuff in mlb. Richards was one of the best before he tore his UCL. Lamet has only 1 year of experience. They can both be MONSTERS if they can show command and control, and Lamet looked absolutely dominant in Spring Training, like he had possibly taken that step forward. We have never even seen Davies, but he and Lucchesi have been showing steady above average results for years. Even Quantrill put up an awesome 3.32 ERA last year before he hit a wall in the last month. I mean, he was even better than Paddack for a time and yet it seems everyone just wants to trade and replace him!

Let's see what we already have in the rotation first. I can't wait to see what Quantrill, our #6 starter can do. Yet people want our what, #8 and #9 starters to start in mlb? Gore still needs to get all his pitches working on the same day. I mean, these guys only have 29.1 innings above class A+ BETWEEN them. They really should have been given a full year of AA this year and maybe gotten a short cameo at the end of the year. They still need time! They are not ready yet. And we have plenty of talent in our current rotation already.

Strongly concur!  Gore and Patino could be effective as middle inning relief pitchers this year but that would be wasting a year of control for both.  In fact, only Patino has to be protected this winter from Rule 5.  Much better for them to get focussed coaching and develop as best they can over this very short season.  Much rather have Baez and Morejon, who are already on the roster, get carried for RH and LH middle innings if necessary or even possibly start but Padres already have a very strong pen - at least on paper.  If Munoz hadn't required surgery, I would say that no other team in the West, NL or AL had a deeper bullpen, giving SD a great chance to compete every day.  I think our starters are under-rated and could surprise teams with pitchers with bigger reputations.  Squeeze out those runs and early leads and we'll have a chance to relevant in 2020.

Love the concurrence around Gore & Patino...  I think there's going to be a strong human nature as fans ESPECIALLY next year to  simply want to  "advance" all the top prospects because a year went by... never mind that many of them didn't get to play at all!

We'll all have to fight that stupid "drummed in" premise that all MLB rookies have to arrive by the time they're 22.4 years old or their future is over...  reality is COVID-19 is going to delay a lot of guys' development by a year or more.

Opening guess on the pitching staff:

Final "13" (for full season only 2 months):

SP: Paddack; Lamet; Davies; Richards; Lucchesi (L);

RP: Yates; Pomeranz (L); Pagan; Castillo (L); Guerra; Strahm (L); Stammen;; Johnson;

plus 1st month: Quantrill; Baez;

plus first 2 weeks: Perdomo; Bednar;

==========

"rostered" taxi squad: Morejon (L); Bolanos; Wingenter; Reyes;

So, in September there will be 8 rostered members of the "taxi squad". Those players should provide a very good call up pool before the need to tap Patino or Gore ... and forcing a move of someone off the 40 man prematurely for only a token filler.

Noticed Olivares is getting some pre-season hype ... good because I like his potential but as with Gore and Patino maybe a bit premature in a short season with playoff hopes.

However, choose to interpret that as good news on OF insurance during the season as the only OF who will be on the taxi squad and on the 40 man. So a decent chance we see him in 2020 since a pretty good chance one of the OF is down with injury at some point.

Small chance he actually can make the final active roster .... he can play all 3 OF slots and is a RHH. With the DH (and limited need for PH) .... might his RH bat and defensive versatility edge out one of Grisham (L), Naylor (L), or Cordero (L) if any of them struggles in Summer Camp. Could be of value against LHP .... assuming he can really hit at the ML level ... and that is not certain after only being in AA last year.

And so it begins:

Jeff Sanders:
Jorge Mateo has tested positive, #Padres manager Jayce Tingler says. Mateo has had loss of smell and taste, but reports are that those senses are coming back.

And so it continues:

AJ Cassavell:
José Castillo exited last night's intrasquad with a lat injury, Jayce Tingler says. Padres awaiting the results of some tests, but they think it's a lat strain.
