And Castillo to the 45 day IL to make room on the 40 man roster.

Talk about being thrown into the fire in your debut!  Good luck Luis!  Go Padres!

The 40 man “eligible” post season roster is set on Sept 15 .... however (as I recall) the 28 man playoff roster is set prior to EACH playoff series.

Wonder IF that leads to setting a 28 for the first three game set and then doing adding / deleting prior to the second five game set. Maybe somewhat based on match-up as well as use / performance in the prior series?

Have no idea how players with no options are handled in this post season scenario.

Maybe if the opponent is LHH or RHH oriented ... the RP mix changes? If the first three game set suggests not coming close to using 15 pitchers .... do they drop some RP in favor of the “extra” position players?

Player has to be on the 40-man roster by 9/15 to be eligible for the postseason.  Campusano is now eligible.  Prevents adding late '"ringers" I guess; teams could DFA good players to save $ late as wink-wink de facto "trades", etc.

Players aren't being optioned if not on the roster for a playoff series, so it doesn't matter whether they have options or not.  Not sure about recall rules though.  If a guy was sent down 3 days before season ended, could he be on the 1st playoff roster?  Probably.

DEFINITELY likely to tweak the roster for the different series.  Very different dynamics best of 3 one location vs 5 vs 7.  Only going to start max 3 P the 1st series, but the games may be back-to-back-to-back, so some need some length.   But this is where the marginal / "not yet" guys (i.e. Guerra) will be left off for a SP who can come out of pen, or more position players.

I would probably want both Mateo (purely as a pinch runner) and Greg Allen (purely as a defensive sub, for LF or maybe in game injury).  If they mimic the off days even if held at a neutral site, should allow to go with fewer guys in pen/more position players to play matchups since each game so critical.

09/08/20 San Diego Padres invited non-roster OF Owen Caissie to spring training.
09/08/20 San Diego Padres invited non-roster SS Reginald Preciado to spring training.

Good but seems odd to make that call in September .... it says spring training not the current 60 man .... however, they did get added to the website's "non-roster" which coincides with the 60 man ... so maybe just a terminology issue.

Love that they're giving the really young guys a taste!

Is there some kind of Training Camp starting up 9/18 for (some) Minors?   If so, seems like 60-man pool young "prospects" might just all shift over there, leaving only the 40-man roster guys (9/15 = playoff eligible cutoff) & a few AAA types as a skeleton crew @ the Alt site.

Does Hosmer have to be on the roster by the fifteenth to be eligible for the playoffs?

No (at least don't think so even in the odd 2020 rules) .... on the 40 is enough but add the IL and he can clearly be activated for the playoffs.

I'm looking at Pham, Pagan, Campusano, Mejia, Hosmer and possibly Perdomo coming back in the next 15 games.  Easy to send down Almonte and Ona but who goes down after that?  For those reasons, probably Williams the next one down when Campusano or Mejia come back after Pham and Pagan.  Hosmer probably won't be back until near the end of the season to get his timing back, at which time whoever was brought up might go down before the playoff match-ups are figured out.  Don't see a need for Perdomo to return unless Paddack completely folds.  We'll see how he does tomorrow; hope he figures it out.

Not so sure they will all return even if healthy.

Likely Pham and Hosmer will return and bump Ona and Almonte. However once they are back and given the good work by Nola / Castro good chance we don't see either Mejia or Campusano.

Pagan's return probably sends Williams back down.

All that is if the returns are before the end of the season. However, the 28 man roster mix may change for the first round (3 game) set (once we fully understand the rules). Probably don't need 15 pitchers (10 RP / 5 SP) with the ability to reset the 28 for the second round. So, maybe add a bat (Mejia or Campusano) and drop another pitcher. Maybe Guerra if option rules don't apply ... Maybe Paddack if a 5th SP is not needed. Might depend if any are "hurting" a bit and not at full strength.

Plus still 3 weeks to have another injury ... fluid.

Pagan activated .... Williams to alt site
