2025 Padres Season
Quote from MrPadre19 on August 6, 2025, 12:24 pmMets and Phils both lose.
If the Cubs can finish off the Reds and we can win tonight it will be a great day no matter what the Duds do.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 7, 2025, 4:18 amdo we go to a six man rotation when King comes back? Or do we keep just optioning the #6 guy down and rotating the next guy up for the occasional spot start?

Shildt, in a pre-game interview, basically said NO to a 6 man rotation ... suggesting that would do more to hurt the pen ... especially in any long consecutive game streak (that is coming later this month).
With the sequence of off days in the near term and coming in SEP ... that should allow that extra day for the SP over the course of the rest of the season.
So, looks as though they go with Pivetta, King, Darvish, Cease, Cortes for the foreseeable future. Note that both Sears and Vasquez were just sent down and can't be recalled for 15 days. So, even for a spot start, they are down to Waldron (not a great option) and then will run into a logistical problem with who they can option (and lose for 15 days). Keep in mind that Reynolds is likely to be optioned when King is activated.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 7, 2025, 7:32 amHowever, if they want to retain maximum flexibility with this staff for next year, they might want to bring one or both back before the 20 day maximum time an MLB player can be sent down without losing an option year. Padres are all in for this year but still have to think of their SP needs in 2026 with possibly only three SP coming back and two of them aging and injury prone.

Quote from fenn68 on August 7, 2025, 7:47 amPadres post trade deadline (6 games) come out with a very good 4 - 2 ... tied for 2nd best record. Now this is where we need to give Preller a lot of credit (albeit that small sample size). Consider in those 6 games:
The high profile top of the order bat,
Tatis ... .095 BA / .412 OPS / 1 RBI
Arraez ... .222 BA / .259 OPS / 0 RBI
Machado ... .250 BA / .641 OPS / 1 RBI
that in isolation would suggest the Padres losing a lot of games, but the offset:
Laureano ... .346 BA / 1.024 OPS / 5 RBI
Fermin ... .438 BA / 1.000 OPS / 3 RBI
Bogaerts ... .333 BA / .971 OPS / 3 RBI
Merrill ... .304 BA / .911 OPS / 5 RBI
Cronenworth ... .263 BA / .891 OPS / 6 RBI
... shows the value of a long line up of good hitters when your "stars" slump. Good on Preller.
Put O'Hearn in a special category ... not much production since arriving BUT the big clutch HR yesterday ... so a big payoff.
The good will come back to normal and, hopefully, those top 3 will rebound to normal still delivering a winning club.
Manny always get very hot and then very cold ... net is good. However, as a Padre, Arraez is nowhere near his previous profile so maybe we are seeing more his Padre profile and should not expect much a rebound. Tatis to be is a real question ... in a long down cycle in BA / SLG ... getting a lot of BB is not what we expect (and pay for) from Tatis. Will he get hot? He may be the hardest to project.

If they use their minor league options in 2025 ... would be the last for Vasquez but Sears would still have one for 2026. So, if they see them (at least Vasquez) as a SP in 2026 should not be an issue of losing an option year. More so since not very likely to re-sign Cortes, Cease, and King is iffy. Also not likely to add a high profile SP.
The greater logistical problem would be who would be optioned (released or to IL) allowing a 26 man roster spot for the call-ups. Both were optioned early enough so that the 20 day limit kicks in during August (before rosters expand on Sep 1). Remember one move will have to happen to accommodate King, neither have a long history as RP, and Shildt seems to discount a 6 man rotation.
Job one is to roll out the best team now to make the playoffs ... so worry about 2026 in the winter.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 7, 2025, 1:08 pmJust win the Series.
Boston is playing well but I like the pitching matchups.
dodgers have three against the red hot Blue Jays.
We could be within 1 game by Monday.
Dave Roberts’ seat might get a little warm if we pass the Duds for the Division lead in the next two weeks

Just thinking ahead based on the last series

Quote from Stergios on August 13, 2025, 9:18 amI’m thinking they definitely will throw inside to him, if for no other reason than to unnerve him. They seem to play these cheap mind games, like last year when Roberts whined about Manny’s throw to their dugout and later admitted it was all BS, but only after the Dodgers’ bow tie-wearing mouthpiece did a hit piece on our boys.
He also shoved Shields this year when the two came face to face. I’ve lost a lot of respect for Roberts to be honest. I had always liked him prior to these shenanigans.
