2025 Padres Season
Quote from MrPadre19 on July 6, 2025, 1:40 pmQuote from fenn68 on July 6, 2025, 12:04 pmInteresting MLBTradeRumors article on the trade possibility of Bryan Reynolds (PITT).
He has a limited no trade clause to 6 teams: those teams are the Yankees, Mets, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Giants, and Padres.
All contenders suggesting that his strategy was to get extra leverage for any deal. He is have one of his poorest seasons, age 30, and comes with 5 more control years at about $15MM per year. Add the limited no trade and that puts PITT in a bit of a bind trying to deal him. PITT is always short on money and will not contend near term so might be forced to make a deal for less than you would expect just to clear the 5 year liability.
Gamble for Preller on the future production at that contract level ... but if he could land him without giving up any major prospects ... worth it?
Re-sign Arraez, trade for Murphy, trade for Reynolds ... offense set for quite a few years ... some question is being set on long term deals is good or bad depending on future production. Money being money those three would cost about $45MM annually ... so likely SP will have to move to internal options.
Arraez,Murphy and Reynolds would cost prospects AND what…..$40+ mil per year?
$15 for Murphy and $15 for Reynolds just adds to our payroll problem and both are on the backside of their careers.

Agree that going the Murphy or Reynolds route would be a problem ... clearly not ideal financially.
Also, going hard to even keep the current roster (therefore creating more needs for 2026) given payroll constraints.
Did a quick guess on the INCREASE in CASH payroll if re-signing Arraez, King, Cease, Suarez, and Diaz ... paying the ARB increases for Adam and Morejon ... recognizing the built in contract increases for Machado (+$8MM) and Pivetta (+$18MM) ...then subtracting Hosmer and some built-in contract decreases. Net guess in an INCREASE in Cash payout of $50-60MM ... for the same team and still needing upgrades in LF and C.
See Preller's problem ... needs to let some big names go just to rake in the cash outlay ... makes even more needs beyond LF/C ... and how does he fill them with any quality ... CHEAPLY and without a lot of prospect trade chips?
Expect some offset by not re-signing Cease or Suarez but probably need more. We know they like King (and visa versa) ... odd game but would they re-sign King on a back loaded deal then trade Pivetta who can opt out after 2026 and likely yield a prospect that might even help in 2026 cheaply. A sell high on Pivetta? Maybe save some 2026 cash, maybe fill a hole in LF or C, create stability in SP beyond 2026.
All that may impact who (or if) they add at the deadline so as either to help or avoid hurting the 2026 strategy.
In the short run, can think of players would like to target at the deadline but not sure they are even available ... and no idea what it would take in terms of trade chips to land them and out bid others. I can think of a lot of players I would be willing to deal but the buyer has a say.

Seems my idea of acquiring Sanchez/Cabrera for 3+ seasons for less than $8 mil per makes more and more sense.Yes would cost prospect capital….mainly for Cabrera….but allowing all the free agents to leave and saving all that $ along with adding a TOR Starter and a “good” LF makes sense….”if” we want to continue to compete in ‘26 & ‘27.
We’re not getting a SP to replace Cease/King via free agency cheaper and depending on 2-3 young arms from the system is risky.
😉

Assuming Tatis’s defense played a big factor…..otherwise it should have been Soto

Both Sanchez and Cabrera would be great gets but doubt the Padres have the assets to acquire both and clearly not Cabrera who would be pursued by a lot of teams with much better trade chips.
3 more years at low ARB dollars for a top flight SP will get MIA some great return IF they even consider trading him. Not sure why they would given that profile. That type of deal would start with DeVries then more.
Might get Sanchez ... only 2 years and not quite as elite ... but again not getting him for Padre throwaways ... MIA should be fine with keeping him unless a compelling deal. Not sure what MIA would be looking for but about all the Padres can offer is upper level SP (multiple) ... especially if they want to move Alcantara. One of Vasquez, Kolek, or Bergert plus one of Baez or Nett? No real idea.

Quote from ultratvfan on July 6, 2025, 5:55 pmThe Padres are linked to a blockbuster trade involving Mitch Keller of the Pirates. The Padres would lose to much for a pitcher they don't need. We have Darvish back, King and Bergert will be back soon, Pivetta, Vasquez, mediocre Cease, and Kolek. I don't believe acquiring Keller is the way to go.
The problem is not pitching, but offense.

That is what is on the Padres website ... been there for awhile. However, King is doing light throwing without discomfort and that may suggest an early August return. As normal the Padres are always very illusive when it comes to true injury status.

The article suggest the Pirates want young offense ... hard to see the Padres filling that need.
Now Preller does like complicated deals ... so to get 3 years of Keller (at AAV around $18MM) and a mid-3 ERA pitcher ... if he deals Cease (FA after the year) for a plus hitting prospect and trades someone else for a plus hitting prospect packages both to PITT for Keller giving PITT some hitting prospects and lowering their payroll. Padres would also toss in a controllable young pitcher. At least something along those lines it is possible .... but doubt probable.
