Duran would certainly help our LF situation, but I'm in agreement with Fenn. I don't think I would want to give up what I expect it will take to land him. I don't think another lefty who struggles against lefties is really the best for our roster either. I know AJ likes to make the splashy moves. I think we'll be better off taking a more modest approach. See if you can get someone like Mike Tauchman or Rob Refsnyder to play LF. Then maybe look at bench bats that can help against lefties like a Miguel Andujar,  or Amed Rosario.

Who plays LF next year?

And in '27?

Tauchman is still controllable through arbitration next year. I would think Refsnyder could be kept at a pretty reasonable cost.

Both would be decent options to hit 8th-9th.

”If” we can figure out the $ part Duran gives you a lead off hitter with superb defense and Luis Robert hives you a #5 hitter with speed and power.

Duran at $8 mil next year is a steal and could always be traded again in ‘26 or ‘27 if $ becomes the issue.

With LRJ at his cost he could be had for very little prospect wise….which means maybe we could add a prospect or two to get CHW to pay down his contract enough to make it happen.

Pretty sure $ is a big factor here.

Gonna have to lose some really good contributors at the end of this year no matter what we do.

We could be w/o Cease,King AND Arraez the way it’s looking

So who knows what AJ and Ownership are thinking at this point.

My guess is they wait till the deadline at this point considering we are hanging with LA as is.

Also, Stowers, who is a lefty, hits lefties very well and that is a player the Padres need.

Cassavell on the Padres website made his guess as to the odds of resigning Arraez / King …

neither 55%
both 2%
King only 8%
Arraez only 35%

apparently did not consider Cease as resigning.

more pessimistic than I was. He should have a better feel for the mood of the organization so?

all that may have an impact on how they approach trades in a win in 2025 mode.

Cash going forward has to be a consideration with the current long term deals, weak upper level minors, and the unknown of a 2027 work stoppage shutting down more than half the season.

Might not want to add someone via trade and give up quality then lose a season of production as they age. Same for FA next winter.

Makes for a more complex negotiation and strategy.

After a hot start, Stowers is not hitting… his past ML work is not compelling nor is his minors. nice but not a difference maker.

If a player has to retire due to injury, does their contract become void?

Obviously, Xander isn't going to retire but could the Pads offer him hush money, say $100 million to have him do so? I'm sure the dude wants to play, and more importantly collect the $200 million but let's face it, no way he makes it another 8/9 years. At some point we have to cut bait.

Depends on how the contract was written.

In Bogaerts’ case likely no injury clause. No incentive for him to take a buyout… maybe in 8 years with a creative offer.

No other team will take his contract unless the Padres ate most of it and gave some decent prospects.

Taking an equally bad contract back … at that level … makes little sense probably for either team.

With no replacement … and none would come cheap … he at least is average for SS … just live with it then IF DeVries is eventually here for SS make a call.

For me, too many near term needs than worrying about Bogaerts.

Less than 10% chance of signing King? That seems almost negligent!

Surely you need depth at SP if you're going to make a run for a championship? And no way reasonable management considers Darvish or Musgrove as viable options for rotation stability( neither one actually pitches!)

So Vasquez, Pivetta, Kolek, Hart,....???? ...for 2026 rotation? If that's the case, time to trade Machado, Tatis, Merrill, etc.

Can't win without good pitching.

Anyone in on Kelenic, Morel, Detmers, Williams, Yoshida? Obviously ANY body would be an upgrade in LF and can always use young, controllable players.

Does Yoshida have anything left? I know he's only 31 but as just a bat guy, is that worth a flyer?

My 26-year-old son, and his wife, are in San Diego until Wednesday. Looking for things to do besides Petco and the Zoo.
Flew across the country for the Dodgers series, I guess I did something right.

But it’s been a long time since I’ve been to SD and even longer since I was 26.

Any suggestions?

They’re doing the Zoo/Balboa Park….Padres….and LaJolla….things he and I did when I took him as a boy.

His wife has never been.

I mentioned Tijuana…..they didn’t seem too keen.🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't like Tijuana either, but, how about Ensenada Mr. P, maybe you can visit a winery or two, or La Bufadora, which is an interesting natural blowhole (in case you haven't heard of it), also there is a couple of good fish tacos shops that even very good chefs have praised about, If interested just send me a private message and I'll gladly guide you 👍
