2025 Padres Season
Quote from Jeremy Hill on June 8, 2025, 8:31 amI don't know if Darvish's contract is insured. Short of Darvish retiring and voluntarily forfeiting the remainder of his contract, a retirement forced by injury with a policy payout is probably the only way the team could really benefit from his retirement. If he were to retire the most likely scenario is that he does it with the team's blessing at which point he just waits to file paperwork until after his contract expires and continues to collect a check. Maybe he lets the team change the structure a bit or agrees to a buyout that saves them some small amount. In all likelihood the benefit would be negligible.

neither 55%
both 2%
King only 8%
Arraez only 35%apparently did not consider Cease as resigning.
more pessimistic than I was. He should have a better feel for the mood of the organization so?
all that may have an impact on how they approach trades in a win in 2025 mode.
Cash going forward has to be a consideration with the current long term deals, weak upper level minors, and the unknown of a 2027 work stoppage shutting down more than half the season.
Might not want to add someone via trade and give up quality then lose a season of production as they age. Same for FA next winter.
Makes for a more complex negotiation and strategy.
Less than 10% chance of signing King? That seems almost negligent!
Surely you need depth at SP if you're going to make a run for a championship? And no way reasonable management considers Darvish or Musgrove as viable options for rotation stability( neither one actually pitches!)
So Vasquez, Pivetta, Kolek, Hart,....???? ...for 2026 rotation? If that's the case, time to trade Machado, Tatis, Merrill, etc.
Can't win without good pitching.
King will get a 5-6 year deal at least $25MM AAV. Those big money long term did not work with Musgrove or Darvish … Burnes, Cole, and a slew of others … so why repeat the mistake? King is already on the IL.
Then factor in Tatis, Machado, Bogaerts, and Merrill are now making little over $60MM but in 5 years that 4 will be over $125MM … can they afford another big money long term deal and construct a competitive roster?
Then if Kolek, Vasquez, and some of the pen produce … think big money ARBs in 4 years with their FA on the come!
I can see the issue on a strategy of trying to always stay competitive … Padres must start producing some low cost internal prospects to balance the roster beyond Salas and DeVris … especially pitching given the high cost of even near quality and the injury factor.

Quote from ultratvfan on June 8, 2025, 6:44 pmReds traded Austin Wynns through waivers to A's for cash consideration. He had put up some good numbers.
The 34-year-old Wynns had batted .400 with a .442 OBP, .700 SLG, 1.142 OPS, HR and 11 RBIs in 18 games with the Reds.
How did AJP miss this? He should have snagged him of waivers and DFA Campusano.

I went to highschool with Austin Wynns. I always root for the local guys. I would have been happy if AJ brought him in. Having said that he's a journeyman catcher who's hit .241 with a .641 OPS for his career while playing pretty average defense. We don't need to overreact to small sample size performances good or bad. The Reds clearly didn't think much of his hot start. I'm not ready to write Campusano off after 19 PAs as a part time DH either.

Quote from BoosterSD on June 9, 2025, 11:07 amOnce prized SP prospect Forrest Whitley has been DFAd by HOU. And I am wondering; with Niebla in house, if he would be a good get for SD. In my mind it would be a straight up Whitley for Campusano trade. Both are struggling/change of scenery candidates IMO.
Thoughts?

Short of Darvish retiring and voluntarily forfeiting the remainder of his contract, a retirement forced by injury with a policy payout is probably the only way the team could really benefit from his retirement. If he were to retire the most likely scenario is that he does it with the team's blessing at which point he just waits to file paperwork until after his contract expires and continues to collect a check. Maybe he lets the team change the structure a bit or agrees to a buyout that saves them some small amount. In all likelihood the benefit would be negligible.
Yu seems like the kind of guy who would just retire even if able to pitch and then walk away from the rest of the contract.
That's why I asked.
We still don't know what the personal issue was last year.....just wondering if,becuase of the way the Org handled that, if it may factor into his decision.
He may come back in July and pitch for 3 more years too?

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 9, 2025, 1:23 pmIMO just having Tatis in RF has won a couple of these recent games for us. Opposing runners don’t stretch singles into doubles, they don’t go 1st to 3rd on singles, they don’t tag up at second on fly balls. When you’re winning one run games, those make a big difference, but don’t show up in the box score

Whitley is out of options. Which pitcher would you take off of the major league roster to fit him in? I wouldn't take him over any of them. If he clears waivers and you could get him on a minor league deal sure. I don't think that's very likely though. No way they trade Campy for him.
