2025 Padres Season
Quote from Randy Manese on June 4, 2025, 6:58 amPadres don't have much that are close to being at least average contributors at the major league level any time soon so Preller probably looking for a team that will roll the dice on a number of prospects that have potential but are in High A or below - kind of what he did to get Darvish from the Cubs. Pickings are slim unless willing to part with De Vries or Salas, so we'll see what he can come up with.

If he can continue to be successful in this role, saves some of the bullets the 1 inning guys like Estrada and Adam have to cover from the right side.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on June 4, 2025, 9:17 amDuran would certainly help our LF situation, but I'm in agreement with Fenn. I don't think I would want to give up what I expect it will take to land him. I don't think another lefty who struggles against lefties is really the best for our roster either. I know AJ likes to make the splashy moves. I think we'll be better off taking a more modest approach. See if you can get someone like Mike Tauchman or Rob Refsnyder to play LF. Then maybe look at bench bats that can help against lefties like a Miguel Andujar, or Amed Rosario.

Who plays LF next year?
And in '27?

Tauchman is still controllable through arbitration next year. I would think Refsnyder could be kept at a pretty reasonable cost.

Padres are well over the CBT for 2025, so depending on the payroll strategy for 2026 the trade adds, winter FA signings, and current roster departures a lot of decisions will be needed by Preller.
Did a quick estimate assuming King and Arraez are resigned but Cease, Suarez, Diaz, and all the other FA are gone. Not much else under the CBT a C, LF, SP, bench considering little in prospects ready to make impact.
Preller may not want to exceed the CBT a second year in a row with the bigger penalty … or at least not by much.

In my perfect world, we would work a trade for Duran using Bogaerts and money back to BOS to offset some of what they offered him prior to FA. I would be OK with Iglesias finishing the year at SS, as their batting stats are close enough to each other. Of course some prospects would need to be added.

Quote from ultratvfan on June 5, 2025, 10:48 amI would think Stowers is the better way to go. He has better numbers than Duran.
Duran (age 28): 274 AVG, .323 OBP, .423 SLG, .746 OPS, 4 HR, 35 RBI, 13 SB
Stowers (age 27): 282 AVG, .351 OBP, .485 SLG, .836 OPS 10 HR, 33 RBI, 3 SB

Unfortunately that doesn’t even cover the increase in Manny‘s contract
