2025 Padres Season
Quote from ultratvfan on May 26, 2025, 11:37 amAmong the names sure to stir speculation is Kyle Stowers. The El Cajon native is having a breakout season in Miami, slashing .300/.375/.571 for the rebuilding Marlins. Preller hooked up with Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix last year on two trades — one for Luis Arraez, another for Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing — which is often a reliable predictor of teams engaging in the future.
But Stowers still has less than two years of major league service time, which could motivate Bendix to hold onto the hot-hitting 27-year-old.

Stowers in a trade becomes an interesting exercise in projection / evaluation leading to "price". For the right "price" MIA would deal him and for the right "price" SD would trade for him.
Stowers has had an excellent 1/3 season so far but pushing against that is his past ML work (300 AB ... sub-700 OPS) which would make some skeptical about a 2 month run in MIA. His minor league stats were not that compelling and never a top prospect with BALT before being dealt to MIA.
He is 27 ... pre-arb (cheap) ... long control. LHH not the biggest Padre need although LF is.
If MIA ... not selling cheaply and could benefit from a hold on a long control / low cost asset who might continue to hit and, in turn, command a very strong return. Also, in the short run, waiting gets more bidders to boost the price.
So, if Preller likes him a lot, would he gamble that the current hot streak is sustainable ... and how much of an "overpay" in MIA's mind would he have to go?
Going to be hard to get MIA to move since Stowers is minimum cost ... the move of Arraez and Scott were in part financially based coupled with the return. (MIA shed Arraez's money for 2025 while eating most of 2024).
Who would MIA demand for a Stowers' deal?

Hart was sent down. I'm guessing that means we see Bergert or Waldron make a spot start against the Giants. I wonder if we'll also see Neighbors head to San Antonio.

Good time for an audition as a candidate to replace Suarez if he opts out after the season.

Might be more than a spot start since King has a pinched nerve and Darvish is still an unknown. If all goes well Padres could have a fresh set of top SP for the second half of the season with the return of King and Darvish.

Quote from fenn68 on May 31, 2025, 2:24 amMLBTradeRumors has its top FA for this winter. Cease is #2 and King is #6 with the speculation of a 6 year/ $25MM AAV deal. Think Padres can get that done. Cease will demand more and will likely depart. Arraez is not top 10 … probably not big demand for his skill set … guessing he gets resigned at around $15MM AAV. 2026 with King, Pivetta, Darvish, Musgrove, and Vasquez as a SP base looks good while setting up some trade chips.

1) Trade Dylan Cease- preferably to an AL team so we don't see him until October. Even as a pending FA, should bring a few pieces.
Then, use the piece/pieces from Cease trade to....
2) grab O'Hearn and Zach Eflin from the O's. Not sure exactly what that deal looks like but you essentially turn Cease into Eflin, his replacement, and an LF.
Who says no?

I get the point of trying to get O'Hearn; however, Eflin is not better than Cease and is also FA after 2025 season as well. Keep Cease and SD will get a pick when Cease declines the QO in the offseason.
