2025 Padres Season

PreviousPage 33 of 68Next

I like Mullins but just don't see BALT make an early move with him unless it is a vast overpay for a "rental".

Looking solely at the teams that likely are throwing up the white flag by June 1 ... see Ward (LAA) and Laureano (BALT) the two that closest fit the Padres' LF need. Neither with a big contract (and Padres would only pick up 2/3) ... Laureano a "rental" and Ward having a tough start to 2025 and LAA may not want him for 2026 (at his projected ARB price). I could live with either one and based on their 2023-24 results ... about the same offensively around 100 wRC+. There would be an advantage with Ward ... controlled for 2026 and the Padres don't have anyone in line for the LF role, so some "insurance" for next year (or they can non-tender him if he flops). Might be worth a bit "extra".

I will toss in a very long shot ... someone linked to Preller "interest"  in the past ... Bryan Reynolds (PITT). PITT has collapsed and fired their manager ... team has a large number of FA after the season then a run of "young" players, only three on long / bigger contracts (Reynolds, Hayes, Keller). Plus PITT always runs a very tight, low payroll. Given their projected team ... not going to contend (probably for a few years) so COULD Reynolds be expendable? He is already 30 under 5 more years (just under $15MM AAV) and that is a good value (for a contender during those 5 years) for a 2-3 WAR player (about average wRC+). Padres not only have a need for 2025 but no clear cut LF prospect internally for years (if any).

Would take a bundle of prospects (not Salas or DeVries) and a couple will need to be high profile. Still prospects are prospects and Reynolds is in his prime and should fill a ML hole at least average (maybe above) for the run of his contract and that would align with Machado and Bogaerts before we might expect their declines in about 5 years so adding Reynolds would fit the window for winning.

BALT can't trade Laureano until June 15th since was signed as a FA last winter.

How many runs have we scored since scoring 3 TD's against the Broncos.....err....I mean Rockies?

Not nearly enough.

By the time Dylan Cease pitches again it will be 50 games in and he has ONE win.

He had a couple stinkers but other than that it's been on the offense.

Not helping his free agency that's for sure.

His FA set-up is going fine with Boras his agent. Wins (or lack of wins) will be blamed on the offensive support. In his 10 starts he had the one disaster Apr 8 with 9 ER in 4 innings ... but what gets sold is in the other 9 starts he has an excellent 3.24 ERA and note that in May (4 starts) down to 2.96 ERA ... so trending even better. Add that he seems to stay healthy and go out and pitch ... adds to his value at age 29.

Cease will be in demand by most of the big money clubs. Padres on the other hand will likely make their push for King (who I like better too).

Of course I didn't mean he wouldn't get paid.Plus he has still has 4 months to get his numbers.

But,I'm sure he'd prefer to be 5-1

Random thoughts. So far, the FA signing of Gavin Sheets has exceeded all expectations given his ML history (and being released by the CWS). Consider his production with the CWS (2021-2024) vs his 2025 with the Padres:

v RHP (CWS ... 1258 PA): 239/306/405 ... wRC+ 98

v RHP (SD ... 127 PA): 293 / 346/500 ... wRC+ 138 (huge improvement)

v LHP (CWS ...176 PA): 168 / 216 / 242 ... wRC+ 26

v LHP (SD ... 23 PA): 227 / 261 / 273 ... wRC+ 52

Major improvement across the board ... can he sustain that over the season? Even if he can't hit LHP and is platooned, a 138 wRC+ for 75% of the games is much needed. He may be the best FA add from last winter ... and still has 3 years of control at a low cost.

With Sheets here and Sanabria in AA and really hitting then Figueroa now in A showing signs of being an impact hitter ... that is a string of LHH 1B/DH types (that profile usually does not generate any major trade interest) ... so, with money always an issue, does a re-signing of Arraez on a long term deal seem less likely (use his money to focus on King, others?).

Turn of events. Darvish was supposed to travel to TOR and join the team and potentially get a start in ATL. Update is that he did NOT go to TOR and will NOT go to ATL. Apparently feeling some effects for his last rehab start ... not a great sign.

With the long run of games with limited days off ... Padres may have to go to plan B with spot starters ... can we see Hart (L) or Bergert again for that role?

All things in perspective ... although the Padres have played poorly on offense and relief pitching for weeks and have been  losing games ... somehow they still hold a wild card slot for the playoffs. It seems as though most of the high flying teams of April have come down to earth in May.

Padres dropped from 14-11 to 9-11 ... yet 22 losses put them only 2 games in the loss column behind LAD (11-10 in May), 1 game behind SF in the loss column (11 - 10 in May), and tied with AZ in the loss column (10-12 in May). All four had winning records in April and the NL West was being touted as the strongest in baseball ... May across the board not so much.

Probably not great in NY for the Mets ... 19 - 8 in April (best in NL) but in May 10 - 11 and no longer leading the NL East as PHIL got hot with the best record in May. (add that Soto play and "attitude" is not pleasing the NY fans / media).

4 months to go ... going to be a bumpy ride.

Was Ty France ever discussed this off season as a possible RH DH/1B? Signed with Minnesota for $1 million. Currently leading them in RBI.

Seems like a hugely missed opportunity, seeing as we were in the market for such a bat.

Imagine the production of he AND Sheets( BRILLIANT signing by the way)
